The coordinates of the University of Illinois are 40° 6 37.94 N, 88° 13 42.28 W. University of Illinois is 120.33 miles from Decatur Central High School. The annual average high and low temperatures at the University of Illinois are 61.2 °F and 41.5 °F. The average temperature at the University of Illinois is 51.4 °F, while the average annual percipitation is 41.1 in. The area around the University of Illinois is mostly a flat prairie or plain. There is a river, called Kaskaskia River, to the east of the university also. Popular attractions in the area around the University of Illinois include the Canopy Club, Urbana Indoor aquatic Center, and the Stone Creek Golf Club. The University of Illinois effects the local economy by bringing in thousands of new students each year. These students buy items and contribute to keeping the economy in the area of the University of Illinois strong. The University of Illinois was founded in 1867. The current student enrollment is 40,239 students at the University of Illinois. The Morril Act in 1862 granted each of the 50 states a portion of land. They were to establish a major public state university. That university could teach agriculture, mechanic arts, and military training. After several cities in Illinois putin bids for the college to be built in their city, Urbana was selected to have the school built in their city. The University opened for its first classes on March 2, 1868. At that time their was only two staff members and a smallgroup of students. From the beggining there was a debate between those who wanted liberal arts curriculum at the college and those who wanted industrial education at the college. Eventually they efforts of both groups paid off when the school became an interdisciplinary university, or a college with more than one focus. The University of Illinois is known for reseach, teaching, and public engagement. The University of Illinois has went to the NCAA Tournament 28 times. They have went as far as the final game. The first time they went to tournament was in 1942. The University of Illinois no longer has mascot. Between 1926 and Febuary 21, 2007, Chief Illiniwek was the mascot for the University of Illlinois. Many American Indian groups accused Chief Illiniwek of being a misapppropiation of indigenous cultural figures and rituals. This led to the retiring of Cheif Illiniwek, the mascot of the University of Illlinois.
