Hagia Sophia The Hagia Sophia was the largest cathedral built at the time and was converted to a mosque by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet. It is considered to be the epitome of Byzantine (Eastern Roman) architecture by most scholars. The Ottomans removed much of the Orthodox iconography and replaced it with more Islamic imagery, however much of the church remained unchanged. The Hagia Sophia also holds the only remains of the Great Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the original Seven Wonders of the world as described by Herodotus. There are columns of green marble that were salvaged from the temple and included in the church. Fun Facts Important?
