Transcript: Modern Dance Presentation By: Makayla Miles and Jie Xin Judith Jamison Personal Life She was the Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company from 1989-2011 She was born May 10, 1943 in Philly She studied ballet, tap, acrobatics, jazz, and primitive dance Became apart of the Alvin Ailey Company in 1965 She left the Company in 1980 to star in the Broadway musical Sophisticated Ladies Attended the Philadelphia Dance Academy Began performing with the American Ballet Theatre in 1964 Went to Judimar School of Dance Attended Germantown High School Also went to Philadelphia Dance Academy She starred in the Prodigal Prince, Masekela Language, and Cry - Cry was a dance specially made for Judith and was about Dance and Academic Dance and Academic Since Jamison grew up being trained in Ballet, she tends to use it a lot in her choreography. She also uses some African elements alongside the ballet and modern style of her choreography, which she picked up from her time on the Ailey Dance Company in the mid-60's through the 70's Society, Cultural, and Historical Influences Society, Cultural, and Historical Influences Forgotten Time(1989): -Music: by Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares -Set: Mysterious, transcendent realm -Costumes: simple leotards designed by Ms. Jamison and Ellen Mahlke Hymn(1993): -Music: Robert Ruggieri -Theme: A tribute to Alvin Ailey -Set: A colored screen in the back -Costumes: Men were topless with red, orange, and pink trousers; Women wore the same trousers, but with a black vest top Divining(1984) -Music: Kimati Dinizulu and Monte Ellison -Theme: A search or a quest -Set: Fog on stage -Costumes: White shirt along with white leggings Famous Works Famous Works Immediately following Ailey's death in 1989, Jamison took over. Throught the years she was in charge she tool the company to new heights with the 50-city global tour to celebrate the company reaching 50 years. And taking the company to two historic events in South Africa. But through these years, she was able to keep the African-based feeling and touch that Ailey placed on the company alive Legacy Legacy Laura Dean Laura Dean born on December 3, 1945 Staten Island, New York. Mathematics has always fascinated Laura Dean and she could have been a geometry whiz. She could have been a mathematician or a philosopher She was always interested in what's going on in astronomy and physics Personal life Personal life She began her dance and music training at the Third Street Music School in New York City where she studied with Lucas Hoving He was her first dance teacher when she was seven years old. He had a major positive impact on her and she considers Lucas Hoving the main reason that she made dance the profession for her life. She then studied at the School of American Ballet with Muriel Stuart She graduated from the High School of Performing Arts/Dance Division She studied at the Joffrey Ballet School with Francoise Martinet and studied jazz with Matt Mattox She was a dancer in the Paul Taylor Dance Company She studied with Paul Sanasardo and was a dancer in the Paul Sanasardo Dance Company She studied ballet with Mia Slavenska Academic and Dance education Academic and Dance education Laura Dean's dances are reminiscent of spinning Sufi dancing of the Middle East, the stomping earthbound nature of African tribal dance, the gestural delicacy of styles of the Far East. The mood is mystic and trancelike. At a musical cue the dancers move into a different form of trance. They make hand gestures vaguely suggestive of Indian mudras, they stamp toe-to-heel with their boots. The music was performed on stage with the dancers by Laura Dean Musicians. Laura Dean considers this work her signature work. This work was created during a month long residency at Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN. with a LONG-TERM RESIDENCY GRANT from The National Endowment for the Arts. Premiere: Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis, MN. Commissioned by Walker Art Center, The American Dance Festival and The Brooklyn Academy of Music. Costume design by Laura Dean. ECSTASY- The music score is for synthesizer and two drummers on two sets of drums. The music was performed on stage with the dancers by Laura Dean Musicians. The choreography is for ten dancers. Premiere: The American Dance Festival, Durham NC 1990. The music and choreography were commissioned by The American Dance Festival. Costume design by Laura Dean. INFINITY- The music score is for synthesizer and two percussionists on two sets of drums. The music was performed on stage with the dancers by Laura Dean Musicians. The choreography is for ten dancers. Premiere: The American Dance Festival, Durham NC 1993. New York Premiere: The Joyce Theater, New York, NY 1994.
