Transcript: Fact #5 : The Hippie movement Changed History By: Anna Covelli Fact #3 : The Hippie Music Era Challenged Authority and Fueled Revolution Fact #2 : Hippies Had Strong Opinions About Political Movements The Hippie style was filled with colorful clothing and crazy hair styles. The name "Hippie" came out of jazz slang from the 1940s, but it’s the psychedelic 1960s that hippies will be known for forever. Hippie fashion was a collage of style, self expression, and rebellion. They use body paint and military clothing to express their individuality. People's minds were open after the Hippie Movement about race, religion, and war. Hippies made light of serious subjects, such as feminism, political issues, and homosexuality. Different activist groups resulted from the Hippie Movement that fought for rights and changed people's views. The Vietnam war ended and our troops were pulled out during this time and protesting really played a part in these decisions. Music had a very big impact to the people back then. Rock & Roll got very popular during this time. Jimi Hendrix became famous by dancing with an electric guitar. There were music festivals back then which still take place today. One of them is called Woodstock. It's located in New York. The large hippie scene was mostly in San Francisco and that's where most of the festivals took place. Hippies went to Festivals to enjoy music, dance, and socialize. It brought them together. Psychedelic drugs and marijuana were very popular back then, because people could "connect with themselves" and "find themselves" by using these types of drugs. It was the culture back then. They used drugs to search for enlightenment. The use of "Dope" was an acceptable form of recreation and it showed that they were resisting the law. They also felt that drugs enhanced creativity, especially with musicians. Fact #4 : Drugs Played A Big Role In The Hippie Culture Fact #1 : The Hippie Style was Psychedelic The peace Sign was a very important symbol for the hippies because it represented their anti-war movements. By the middle of the 1960’s, the peace symbol had become highly recognizable and popular in the counter culture. People still use the peace sign today. They rebelled against any social law or tradition. They wanted to live free and if it feels good you should do it, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.
