US AIR FORCE GUIDELINES Officer candidates are required to take the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT). Qualified college students wishing to train as officers should consider Air Force ROTC or the Air Force Academy. 2. The Air Force began as a subdivision of the U.S. Army and was declared an official combatant arm in 1920. It wasn’t until 1947, following World War II, that the Air Force was recognized as its own military branch. GUIDELINES BEFORE SERVING 5. To join the Air Force, you must be between 18 and 27 years old, or 17 with parental consent. While exceptions are sometimes made for candidates with GED s or other high school equivalents, high school diplomas are preferred. Minimum entrance-age requirements are 17 with parental consent or 18 without parental consent. 9. Keep in mind almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. 10. The varying physical demands on service members in each branch, physical requirements vary greatly. These differences can vary even within each branch of the Service. 11. Success in any branch of the Military depends on a good education, and a high school diploma is most desirable. Candidates with a GED (General Education Development certificate) can enlist, but some Services may limit opportunities. 12. U.S. citizens or Permanent Resident Aliens (people who have an INS I-151/I-551 “Green Card”) may join the U.S. Military.
