The school of medicine was established at this time and so was the chancellor of the university Millard Fillmore. He was a lawyer and a congressman at the time chancellor was merely an honorary title. In 1847 on February 24th the first classes began. On July 16th 18 graduates receive medical degrees. Millard Fillmore was sworn in as the 13th president of the United States on July 10th 1853.
