Transcript: College Education: UMass Amherst Estimated costs for 2012-2013: (subject to change) In-State Tuition/Fees: $13,230 Room/Board: $9,937 Total: $23,167 Other Costs: In addition to tuition and fees, you will need to factor expenses for books and supplies into your academic costs. These will vary according to your field of study, but generally average $1000 for the academic year. Personal and transportation expenses usually range from $700 to $1,400 per year. We add these expenses to the costs above and use the total—a figure referred to as your “Cost of Attendance”—to determine your eligibility and need for financial aid. Federal Loan Limits There are limits on the amount that students may borrow under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program for one academic year. Dependent undergraduates in their freshman year may borrow up to $5,500 (no more than $3,500 may be subsidized), sophomores up to $6,500 (no more than $4,500 may be subsidized) and juniors and seniors up to $7,500 (no more than $5,500 may be subsidized). The cumulative limit for an undergraduate education is $31,000. (The subsidized portion may not exceed $23,000). If you are an independent student or a dependent student whose parent has been denied the PLUS loan you may borrow additional unsubsidized loan up to $4,000 the first two years and $5,000 the remaining years. The cumulative limit for independent undergraduate students and dependent undergraduate students whose parent has been denied a PLUS loan is $57,500. (The subsidized portion may not to exceed $23,000). Why? I decided on this college because of the science courses it offers and the proximity to my home town. Would I still make this purchase? After completing my projects I would still make this purchase because college is a necessity in our generation and I believe it would help me out in the long run. What did I learn? I learned that choosing a College is a big step in life and it is a big investment that deserves a lot of time and research.
