Many of the planters and merchants joined the loyalists at first because they benefited from Britain and didn't want to be independent. Many colonists joined the Loyalists for this reason exactly. Many Loyalists feared that a revolution would be the perfect time for slaves to revolt, which kept them from the patriots. The two sides got to a point where they not only fought Great Britain but each other. After declaring independence from the British, South Carolina’s first challenge was the Native Americans. Both the British and the Americans hoped to get the Cherokee on their side. They were the most powerful tribe. The Cherokee were mad at the Americans because they settled on their land. They began raiding towns along the frontier. Some times they even fought with the Loyalists. South Carolina had to do something. They set up a force to attack the Cherokee. They attach Cherokee villages and farms. Eventually the Cherokee signed a treaty with them to prevent further destruction. Francis Marion was born on 1732. Marion was a part of the Provincial Congress. He helped defend Sullivan's Island, and fought with Lincoln in the patriots failed attempt to capture Savannah. Banastre Tarleton gave him the nickname 'Swamp fox' because he used his extensive knowledge of the swamps to help avoid capture. He was in engaged in a 7 hour 26 mile chase in which he used his knowledge of the swamps to lose Tarleton. Marion's Brigade operated mostly in Pee Dee and the lowcountry regions. He was one of 3 famous leaders that engaged in partisan warfare. When the war ended he went to the SC state senate. He later married his cousin Mary Esther Videau. He died in Pond Bluff, on February 7, 1795. Toby Walker 12/28/15 Sch Trading Cards Project Patriots Tea Act Women Women played a big role in the revolution and so did all patriots. When men away, women ran the family farms and businesses. Some women found themselves in some dangerous situations and they performed acts of bravery. Some women found themselves getting interrogated to the whereabouts of their husbands. One women named Martha Bratton said she didn't know where her husband was when british soldiers arrived. A loyalist took a reaping hook and held it threateningly up to her throat. She responded calmly and before the soldier could harm her a other soldier knocked him down. Women were often spies. One women overheard talk of a ambush and rode 50 miles to warn the patriots. Women were also messengers during the war. Women became lots more respected after the war. After the stamp act was gone, Britain was trying a new approach to pay off their debts. The East India Trading co had lots of 17 million pounds for sale. They had trouble getting it sold and that’s where the tea act came in. In 1773 parliament passed the tea act allowing ships carrying tea to skip going to Britain and receiving the tax. This made tea cheaper than smuggled dutch tea, even though it had the townshed duty on it. This gave Britain the control over the tea trade. It also meant that if colonists bought the tea they would be saying that it was ok for parliament to tax them. However the colonists saw though their plan. The colonists were ready when the tea ships came in. They climbed aboard the ship and threw the tea overboard. This was called the Boston Tea Party. After the stamp act was passed, people throughout the colonies had huge reactions. Their reactions were intense and some colonists wanted to break off from Britain already. Protesters formed groups and called themselves the Sons of Liberty. The two biggest groups of the Sons of Liberty were Charles Town and Boston. The leader of the Boston Sons of Liberty was Samuel Adams. The leader of the Charles Town Sons of Liberty was Christopher
