Transcript: Simplicity “Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already have. —Anonymous Don’t be obsessed with getting more material things. Be relaxed with what you have. Since God assured us, “I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,” we can boldly quote, In all your ways know, recognize and acknowledge him and He will direct and make striaght and plain your paths. 11 Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. “Do what you’re good at and everything else will fall into place." Transcript: Simplicity, Simplicity, Simplicity! What Do the following quotes mean? Society is overwhelmed by the extras in life. People need to simplify their lives. You spend too much time wasted on the detail. We are only focused on getting more, than being thankful for what we already have. We're only looking forward to the future, and not appreciating the present. Main Ideas: Our society adds much more detail than necessary. We should be more happy with what we already have. What is Thoreau's advice on how we should live? He states that we should simplify our life. We don't need to add so much detail about the future, and enjoy the time we have now. There's no point in worrying about everything. Are we "frittered away by detail"? We are focused on detail, and never really life in the moment. Yes, we are frittered away by detail. #YOLO Songs & Lyrics The Show Slow it down, make it stop or else my heart is going to pop 'Cause it's too much, yeah it's a lot to be something I'm not I'm a fool out of love 'cause I just can't get enough I'm just a little bit caught in the middle Life is a maze and love is a riddle I don't know where to go, can't do it alone I've tried and I don't know why I'm just a little girl lost in the moment I'm so scared but I don't show it I can't figure it out, it's bringing me down I know I've got to let it go and just enjoy the show The sun is hot in the sky just like a giant spotlight The people follow the signs and synchronize in time It's a joke nobody knows, they've got a ticket to the show "The nation itself...is cluttered with furniture and tripped up by its own traps, ruined by luxury and heedless expense." "Simplicity, Simplicity, Simplicity! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumb-nail."

Simplicity

Transcript: "Instead of feeling distraught over this turn of events, moreover, McCandless was exhilerated: He saw the flash flood as an opportunity to shed unnecessary baggage. He concealed the car as best he could....Then, in a gesture that would have done both Thoreau and Tolstoy proud, he arranged all his paper currency in a pile on the sand...and put a match to it. One hundred twenty-three dollars...was promptly reduced to ash and smoke." Into The Wild (p 29) "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd Forget your lust for the rich man's gold All that you need is in your soul, And you can do this if you try. All that I want for you my son, Is to be satisfied. Boy, don't you worry. You'll find yourself. Follow your heart, And nothing else. You can do this, If you try. All that I want for you my son, Is to be satisfied. Baby, be a simple, be a simple man Oh, be something you love and understand Baby, be a simple kind of man Simplicity plays a crucial part in transcendentalism. Thinkers such as Henry David Thoreau believed that "our lives are becoming frittered away by detail," and that humans should rely on the self, return to nature, and simplify life to its core. Simplicity not only counteracts the greed that drives society, but it helps mankind return to his roots and appreciate the universe in its sheer beauty. Was Chris a Modern Day Transcendentalist? Thank You "It is desirable that a man live in all aspects so simply and preparedly that if an enemy take the town...he can walk out the gate empty handed and without anxiety." -Henry David Thoreau “I do believe in simplicity. It is astonishing as well as sad, how many trivial affairs even the wisest thinks he must attend to in a day; how singular an affair he thinks he must omit. When the mathematician would solve a difficult problem, he first frees the equation of all incumbrances, and reduces it to its simplest terms. So simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real. Probe the earth to see where your main roots run." -Henry David Thoreau Simplicity After graduating from university, McCandless gave up a life of luxury to follow the mindset and ideals set before him through past thinkers such as Leo Tolstoy and Henry David Thoreau. He decided to fulfill his ultimate destiny and turn against a "habitual lifestyle and engage in unconventional living." In his search for a true experience, McCandless adopted ideas similar to the transcendentalist movement of the mid-1800's. Because of this, Chris McCandless truly was a modern day transcendentalist.
