Transcript: The Culture of Post-Revolution Iran Art Because of the presidency of Mohammad Khatami, who allowed the freedom of expression and was the president after the revolution, many artists started to explore different techniques. Music, after the war, became very censored. Western music (rap, pop, and rock) have become socially unacceptable. Many musicians are extremely upset that they can not completely express themselves in their music. The rap, pop, and rock music has even been banned. education Family Life The family is the most significant element of Iranian culture and society. rely on family connections for influence, power, positing, and security. Iranians live with distrust- the only trusting relationships exist within the family unit Friendships are very important. They often begin in school and are close intimate, and of long duration. Friends remain loyal and are likely to meet regularly, make mutual demands, have high expectations of each other, and exchange favors. Family Life continued Iranians are very hospitable, and guests are treated with unusual courtesy and generosity. hospitality is present at all social levels. They rely on a social code that prescribes correct behavioral patterns toward those in each position in the hierarchy. Men and women must wear loose-fitting clothing. To be fully modest in Iran women most cover their hair while out in public. Women do this by wear a veil or headscarf. Fashion continued Women are also not allowed to wear make up out in public. However, when women are in the privacy of their homes or only around other females they are allowed to dress however they please. Women had to wear black or dark colored clothing and veils but during the reformist period was the first time the women were allowed to wear bright colors. Higher Education in Iran is mainly 46 universities for Secondary Education graduates to attend. However, after the Islamic Republic was proclaimed, many colleges were either forced to close or changed names. Primary education (grades 1-5) is mandatory for children ages 6-11. Many subjects are taught including: Religious Teaching, Persian reading and comprehension, social studies, arts, math, and physical education Lower Secondary Education is for the six and eigth graders. This phase of schooling focuses on preparing the students for their second half of secondary education. Upper Secondary Education is based on the grade students recieve on their final exams from lower secondary education. This phase of education focuses on student's future career paths. Schooling includes the General/Academic Track and the Technical/Vocational Track. General Track courses are focuses on Literature, Math, Social Studies, and Math. Transcript: Siddhartha Background Michael Henry Buddhism Intro to Buddhism Buddhism is an ancient spiritual religion that started in India. It's all about understanding suffering, why it happens, how to stop it, and the way to reach this state called Nirvana. They follow the Eightfold Path, which is like a guide to living right and finding enlightenment so you don't have to be reborn again and again. Gotama Buddhism was created when a young man named Gotama left his wealthy family to search for an end to human suffering. Through meditating he found Nirvana, the escape from reincarnation after death. To find Nirvana you have to cut ties with love and desire. Gotama's followers labeled him Buddha. Legacy After Hesse's wife was placed in a mental intitute, his son caught meningitis, and his father died in 1916, Hermann started a mental search, becoming interested in the ideas of Freud and Jung. Some characters in Siddhartha are based from Hesse's study in Jung's theories. Jung thought that the mind was split into 3 parts; the concious, unconcious, and collective unconcious. The collective unconcious theory is shown through Vasudeva, the wise Ferryman. Mid Life Hermann Hesse was born in Germany July 2, 1877.
