Transcript: Act 1 Scene 1 and 2 At the beginning of act 1, Romeo is very upset because he is inlove with a girl called Rosaline who wishes to remain a virgin for the rest of her life. Romeo then meets one of Capulets servants on the street. The servant asks Romeo to read the list of people who will be attending Capulets party. Romeo realizes that his love , Rosaline, will be attending the party. He decides to go. Does not appear in scene 3 Scene 4 and 5 Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio are making their way to the masked party. Romeo is still depressed, even though he gets to see Rosaline. Mercutio tries to cheer him up by telling a story about Queen Mab, a fictitious elf that infiltrates men's dreams. Romeo finally shushes him and comments that he is afraid of the consequences of going to this party. Romeo stands to the side during the dancing, and it is from this spot that he first sees Juliet. He immediately falls in love with her. Tybalt overhears Romeo talking to a servingman and recognizes him as Romeo Montague by his voice. However, before Tybalt can creat a scene, Old Capulet tells him to leave Romeo alone, since it would look bad to have a brawl in the middle of the festivities. Romeo finds Juliet and touches her hand. Romeo eventually gets to kiss her. However, Juliet is forced to go see her mother. The Nurse tells Romeo that Juliet is a Capulet, at which he is startled. Juliet finds her Nurse at the end of the party and begs her to find out who Romeo is. The Nurse returns and tells her he is Romeo, the only son of the Montague family. Juliet is heart-broken that she loves her familys enemy. Act 2 Scene 1 and 2 Romeo enters and leaps over a garden wall. Mercutio and Benvolio arrive looking for Romeo, but cannot see him. Benvolio finally gets tired of searching for Romeo, and they leave. Romeo has meanwhile succeeded in hiding beneath Juliet's balcony. She appears on her balcony and, in this famous scene, asks, "Oh Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?". She wishes that Romeo's name did not make him her enemy. Romeo, hiding below her, surprises her by interupting and telling Juliet that he loves her. Juliet warns Romeo that his protestations of love had better be real ones, since she has fallen in love with him and does not want to be hurt. Romeo swears by himself that he loves her, and Juliet tells him that she wishes she could give him her love again. Romeo quickly tells Friar Laurence that he has fallen inlove with Juliet Capulet. The Friar is suprised to hear that Romeo has forgotten about Rosaline so quickly. Scene 3 and 4 Benvolio and Mercutio speak about Romeo's disappearance the night before. Benvolio tells Mercutio that Romeo did not come home at all. Romeo arrives and soon engages in a battle of wits with Mercutio, who is surprised by Romeo's quick replies. He says, "Now art thou sociable, now art thou Romeo". The Nurse tells Romeo her mistress is willing to meet him in marriage. Romeo indicates the Nurse should have Juliet meet him at Friar Laurence's place that afternoon. Scene 5 Romeo and Friar Laurence are in the chapel waiting for Juliet to arrive. The Friar cautions Romeo to "love moderately." Juliet soon appears and Friar Laurence takes the two young lovers into the church to be married. When Balthasar leaves, Romeo decides to go and find apothecary. He asks the apothecary if he has any poison. He says he does, but the also says the punishment for selling poison is death. Romeo then says the apothecary looks poor and that he will pay well for it and thn the apothecary agrees. Romeo then says he is heading to Juliet's tomb to kill himself so he can be with her. Romeo thinks Mercutio is only hurt. But Mercutio says 'tis not so deep as a well,nor so wide as a church door. But 'tis enough.'Twill serve. Ask for me tomorrow,and you shall find me a grave man. Does not appear in Act 4 feel free to edit . Romeo does not appear in act 5 scene 2, but, in scene 2, Friar Lawrence asks if Friar John was able to deliver the letter. Friar John replies saying he was unable to get it to Romeo. Because of this, it lead to the death of Romeo, Juliet and Paris. Scene 1 Scene 3 When Friar Laurence brings him the news of his banishment, Romeo falls into deep despair. To Romeo a sentence of banishment is worse than a sentence of death. To him life outside Verona would be meaningless. As he puts it in a famouse line, 'There is no world without Verona walls'. When the Nurse comes in with news of Juliet's troubled state. Romeo thinks of suicide, with the taught of stabbing himself to death. Frair Laurence tries to explain to Romeo that Juliet is alive , the one Romeo loves and wants to be with for the rest of his life. He advises Romeo to tell Juliet about his sentence. Friar Laurence hopes that the news of marriage of Romeo and Juliet can be made public after a suitable interval. He promises to send him news from Verona from time to time.
