Short Presentation for RITES Professional Development Background Information In this lab the amount of water was varied to see if it would affect the energy released from the FRH. To figure this out there were three trials with different volumes of water: 50mL, 100mL, and 150mL. The control was the FRH that stayed the same with each trial. The dependent variable was the temperature. The independent variable was the amount of water. The FRH packet was placed in an Erlenmeyer flask. Then the measured out water was added. Once the reaction started the temperature probe was placed in the flask and recorded on a graph on the computer. Flameless ration heaters (FRH) were created by the United States army so the soldiers in the field could heat their food. This is a good tool because they can heat there food without having to make a fire and possibly give away their positioning. The FRH is made up of magnesium, iron, and salt. Then water is added creating a reaction that rapidly boils the water to heat the food. The iron is a catalyst and the salt is in it to break down the protective coating on the magnesium metal. This results in the equation : Mg + 2H2O → Mg(OH)2 + H2 This is an exothermic reaction releasing energy and giving off heat. What would happen the if there was less or more water added? We decided to test this. If more water is added to the FRH then the higher the temperature would be. 150 ml 50 ml And one more thing... is prezi making you dizzy yet? With 25 grams of iron, the output of the reaction was reduced by about half. 50 grams, it was reduced by about half again. With 75 grams, it would be reduced by about half again. Flameless Ration Heater Investigation I Method The graph above shows the variations in temperature with different volumes of water. The dark blue line is the flask filled with 150mL, the light blue is 100mL, and the grey line is 50mL. The results show that the dark blue line had a top temperature of about 84 degrees Celsius. The light blue line had a top temperature of about 75 degrees Celsius. The grey line had a top temperature of about 67 degrees Celsius. Showing that the more water added the higher the temperature. I Conclusion Method Subject 3 What was investigated was if iron was added to the FRH. Needed materials to have for the experiment are an eulermayer flask, a graduated cylinder, several FRHs, rubber corks, a thermometer, and iron. Take the flask and put in a FRH with no excess iron. This is the control. Fill the graduated cylinder with 100mg of water and place into the flask. Place the thermometer surrounded by a rubber cork into the flask and record results. When that is completed, take 25g of iron and place into the flask along with a FRH. Again, place 100mg of water into the flask and record the results with a thermometer. Lastly, place 50g of iron into a flask along with a FRH and add 100mg of water. Record the results. When more water was added to the FRH the temperature was higher. You see this in the graph above because when we added the most water of 150mL it had a higher initial peak of about 84 degrees Celsius but you see with all different trials that they all level off around 67, 68 degrees Celsius. If the trial with 150mL went a longer that would show. Background Information Technology is wonderful...when it works. Once all the bugs & glitches are worked out I'm sure I will feel differently about using the probeware. I did like the RITES FRH investigation It gives the students perceived freedom to explore science. It was easy for the student to follow and allows deeper analysis of data. Subject 1 Discussion of Results This experiment showed that with more iron catalyst, the less energy in the form of heat was released during the reaction. This is because it lowered the activation energy needed for the reaction to occur. None of the trials with added iron reached the control’s peak of 84.5 degrees C. In fact, the every time iron was added it reduced the temperature by about half each time.
