Transcript: How do your products use or challenge conventions and how do they represent social groups or issues? By: Elizabeth Bates Conventions & Representation Forms & Conventions Representation Definitions Definition Media Form Generic Conventions Media forms are the general rules by which the media is produced, consumed, read and distributed. Media forms can include moving images (such as film or tv), still images (such as photography) and audio (for example radio), or print. For example a digipak will always include the track names and album name. generic conventions are specific details/repertoire of elements that allow the product to be put into a specific genre. For example westerns usually involve a cowboy and horses. Our Star Representation Star Image / Ideology Indie alternative stars tend to wear relaxed clothing; cultivating a 'boy next door' image. This meets the ideology expectation of indie alternative and how it should appear (mise-en-scene) and sound. Video Conventions & Representation Music Video Mise-en-scene Mise-en-scene CONVENTION We developed a conventional indie-alternative mise-en-scene. We used simple clothing that looks comfy and more like 'the boy next door'. We used jumpers, jeans, shirts and jackets of all colours and style. the lead singer is central within the band indicating his lead role. When it came to the narrative side of the music video, we used a stereotypical hospital gown to emphasize that he was in a hospital, as well as using obvious props like a saline drip and a bed. REPRESENTATION We wanted to represent our band as approachable and down to earth through their costumes and relaxed attitude. The lead singer is dressed slightly differently to the boys either side of him, and in filming we focused on him more than the others. For the visual composition the sheets on the floor were casually left to show the band were very relaxed. CONVENTION: Simple Filters and effects are conventional for the Indie alternative genre, such as this black and white filter displayed here. We also used this black and white filter and some effects such as a white flash transition. Filters & Effects Filters & Effects REPRESENTATION: The black and white filter was specially used to represent and distinguish flashbacks of the patient, and to highlight the bleak and dismal interpretation of the song and video, representing the sad state of the comatose boy. Framing / COMPOSITION Framing CONVENTION Using specific framing and composition techniques throughout the video is typical of the genre, some of these shots may include low angles, fast movement, breaking up the frame, we developed some of these techniques in our video. REPRESENTATION: Using these techniques can sometimes make the frame seem inescapable (that is if you used breaking up the frame for example). If you use extensive lead space, it makes the star appear as dominant and in control. The latter was our aim, Editing Style Editing CONVENTION It is very typical for this genre of music to have a mixture of fast and slow cutting speed. Throughout my own video we used mainly a slow cutting speed to the beat of the music, in the flashback sequence we sped this cutting speed up to imply it was a dream/memory rather than real life. REPRESENTATION: Using these techniques of editing makes the star have a certain appearance to the audience, they seem enthusiastic and energetic when the editor uses colour and high speed cutting, In the shots where we used black and white filters we wanted to give the impression of his life now being passed and the slow cutting speed makes it more melancholic. Narrative Narrative CONVENTION This narrative was conventional for the genre and the song, the lyrics were played out during the video. Indie alternative music often has a lot of meaning behind it and can be quite gritty or depressing, this was also exemplified in our own music video. REPRESENTATION: Using these techniques of narrative make the band seem very thoughtful, caring and 'in touch', it helps the audience to empathize with the lyrics. Digipack Conventions & Representation Digipack IMAGE / COVER Images CONVENTION The typical conventions of an indie alternative digipak are handwritten and scruffy designs. The title of the album usually has a key message behind it. The professional one above does not include a photo although ours does, I think both still fit into the genre well. REPRESENTATION: It shows that the stars are quirky and unique, they are also creative and have a meaningful message they want to communicate to their audience, the impression here is that they are drawing attention to the state of our unstable existence. TYPEFACE / GRAPHICS Typeface CONVENTION The conventional typefaces used here are quite different but eye catching and simple. One is very digitized and the other handwritten but both use a black and white interchanging font. REPRESENTATION: This represents the star as young and crazy, creative and free spirited. I realize that I cannot always be happy in what I'm doing, but in this case, it doesn't make sense for me to be miserable, and you'll see why in a second. If nothing else, humor me. Manhattan's community college. It is located in TriBeCa, a safe area of the city, and they offer a degree in Writing and Literature The College Question: A Powerpoint Currently, I am a student at the Royal Oak Campus of Oakland Community College, which offers interesting classes, has an amazing library and spacious campus, and is close enough to home that I can still live at home, which is, admittedly, easier and cheaper than living elsewhere. Okay, Now To What You Know Is Coming Current Standings I'm extremely unhappy. I don't feel like I belong at OCC, and I don't feel as though I will accomplish very much there. I am not doing anything directly related to my major either, simply because OCC does not offer a Journalism program. You guys know what I'm going to say next, so let's just get it over with: Yes, this is about New York. But before you start getting aggravated and hasty, hear me out. Finish my first year at OCC as planned Transfer to BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College in the Fall of 2014 My Proposal The Problem With This is.. What Is BMCC? I'll get used to living in NYC before university Going to a Community College in NYC would make it easier to transfer credits After living there a year, I'll be considered a Resident of the state, meaning lower tuition when going to university

She always kept most things to herself, and tried not to concern others with her problems. She was also well liked among almost everyone. She was a great influence on our lives, and only wanted the best for everyone she cares about. The story takes place in Cody's city, Tacoma. And Meg's city, Seattle. Tacoma is a very suburban and rural area, while Seattle is very populated and urban. Meg's college is University of the Cascades (Seattle). Meg commits suicide in a motel room. How Did You Connect To The Text? I predict that the grief of Meg's death will die down slowly, but surely, Cody will always be impacted by Meg. Something I Learned About Reading This Book Is... Summary Author : Gayle Forman I connected on a very personal level. After reading this book, I've valued my friendships more as they could dissapear without answers. Independent Novel Discussion Question PowerPoint This book focuses on an eighteen-year old girl named Cody who had just lost her best friend, Meg, to suicide. Cody is in a mourning state living in a small town, her father is absent, and her mom is unsupportive. She then is asked to go to Meg's dorm room to collect her belongings. Cody finds Meg's laptop and immediately starts digging into it to try and find out why Meg would want to kill herself. Some speculations occur if Meg's ex-boyfriend pressured her, or a mysterious man online, and even if she was actually murdered. Meg does not have much character in the story besides she was implied as the "it girl." So Meg's suicide was a shock to the whole town. Cody is left to pick up all the pieces to what really was going on with Meg. Carburetor - A device in an internal combustion engine for mixing air with a fine spray of liquid fuel. essential question powerpoint

Transcript: Essential question powerpoint By: Erin Temple I Psychological disorders Psychological disorders, also known as mental illnesses are disorders that effect a persons mental health which includes changes in the way a person thinks, their emotions, and their behavior. A person may get a psychological disorder through their genes or it can come from the environment in which one lives in. Are psychological disorders influenced more by genetics or by a person's environment? II Psychological disorders in the US As of 2015, around 25% of adults in the United States have some sort of psychological disorder, and around 13% percent of children in the United States are diagnosed with a psychological disorder each year. In 2015, over 10% of the population in the US had depression, 9-11% had signs of ADHD III Causes of psychological disorders: Environmental factors IV There are many things that can cause a psychological disorder; trauma (such as abuse or loss of a loved one, natural disasters can even contribute), emotional harm (bullying), and substance abuse (which can also help aid in addiction and lead to substance abuse) are all environmental factors that contribute to psychological disorders. Causes of psychological disorders: Genetic factors Genetic factors that play a role in a person having a psychological disorder are epigenetic regulation (this contributes to how a person reacts to something in their environment), genetic polymorphisms, and single gene changes also contribute to physological disordes. V VI Genetics If a member of your family has a certain psychological disorder, your risk of getting it increases, however it may skip generations. Genetic polymorphisms will not lead to a psychological disorder on their own but with the added stress from something in the environment, it may aid in it. Epignetic regulation determines how someone reacts to something in the environment that may lead to a disorder, it depends upon how someone reacts to the stimuli in their environment. Schizophrenia and Depression Researchers believe that schizophrenia has a strong genetic component. If a set of identical twins are born and one twin has schizophrenia there is a 45%-60% chance that the other twin also has it. Genetic contribution to depression is around 30%-40%. However, with both schizophrenia and depression, environmental factors also play a role in their development. VII The environment Scientist define the environment as everything except genes. Things in the environment that can lead to the devlopment of a disorder are stressors, such as a breakup or the loss of a loved one or something that may cause a negative emotional reaction. VIII If a family member has a psychological disorder are they guaranted to pass it down? IX Most pyschologial disorders have an evironmental trigger. If someone in your family has a psychological disorder it does make you more susceptible to that disorder, but their is no guarante that you will have that disorder. Psychological disorders can also skip over generations. chart X Conclusion XI In the factors that contribute to a person obtaining a psychological disorder, the environment in which they are in plays a bigger factor than genetics. There is no guarantee that you may inherit a disorder, it increases a person's chance in getting the disorder if their parent or grandparents have it, but their is usually an enironmental trigger that causes the person to show symptoms of the underlying disorder. Some disorders such as schizophrena might not have a trigger, the symptoms just begin to appear as someone ages.
