Transcript: Pretty - begins with descriptions of different aspects of nature that are normally not seen as being "pretty" (i.e. water rat) - humans are brought into the poem and are seen as being thieves and yet still seen as pretty - ends with the speaker stating that everything in humanity is pretty - repetition dominantly used (the word pretty is said 21 times throughout the poem) - a free verse nature poem - the poet incorporates humour, attempting to point out that people often ignore what they do not like in the world just because they dislike it Despite the fact that not everything in this world is pretty, it is necessary for humanity to appreciate it for what it is instead of choosing what is viewed as beautiful. Summary Interesting Notes Important Lines "The owl hunts in the evening and it is pretty" (13) - This line portrays the hunt as being "pretty" even though it is normally not distinguished that way. "So a person can come along like a thief-pretty!-/ Stealing a look, pinching the sound and feel," (29-30) - We take everything as humans that we want to perceive as pretty and ignore the rest. "Cry pretty, pretty, pretty and you'll be able/ Very soon not even to cry pretty" (33-34) - If we keep saying everything is "pretty" and keep viewing the world through the lens of "pretty," soon nothing will be "pretty" anymore. Theme Stevie Smith
