What Are Templates? Templates Templates are frameworks for a document that are pre-designed to fill in information. To Download: How to Download 1.) Log into your Blackboard. 2.) Click ENG 304-01W. 3.) Click Projects. 4.) Click Project 2: Using Templates. and Styles. 5.) Click Resources. 6.) Click Memo Template. Template Use: How to Use 1.) Save a backup copy of the template to ensure you always have a copy. 2.) Delete preset information. 3.) Type your information in place of the information deleted. How to Save: 1.) Click File. 2.) Click Save a Copy. 3.) Change the file name to the appropriate file naming that aligns with the class expectation. How to Save Styles What are Styles? Styles are formatted settings for text in a Microsoft document. Why Use Styles? The benefit of using styles is that it saves time with formatting a document. By using styles, you can focus on creating content by inputting information. Using styles also creates consistent formatting for the reader. Word Styles - A style on is a "predefined combination of style, color, and size that can be applied to any text in your document." - There are various styles that we can use for different sections of a document such as the title, the headers, and the lists. - It is important to organize your content within your documents, and this can be done with styles which will increase brand consistency and content creation efficiency. Examples - Although we have specific styles already predefined in our template that we are supposed to use for class, here are examples of the default styles that can be used on Word. - Using a style will help overall uniform all the headings and create a more efficient formatting environment. How to use the memo template Follow the instructions below to use our memo template correctly with the predefined styles: Memo Templates - Find the memo template on our Blackboard course page and save it to your computers. - Whenever using the template to create a memo, duplicate the original document. * To duplicate, look for the template document in Word and right-click on the document and choose "Open as Copy". - When creating a memo, make sure to rename the document with the format LastNameFirstNameMemoDescription.docx - You put your last name, first name, and then a small title describing the document. - Make sure you are retyping any progress you already made on a previous document. Introduction This presentation will discuss the use of styles in Microsoft Word and why it is important to use in your work along with knowing how to use a template and why it is important. Styles In Microsoft What are styles & why are they important Applying Styles Styles are very important when creating a template. Once you apply words to your template and use styles, it changes the whole appearance. Applying styles to your work is as easy as this Step one: you want to highlight the text that you want to make a change too. Step two: On the home tab on Microsoft, you will see the panel named "Styles", you want to click on that & then you will see options pop up on the drop down menu. Step three: Click on the style you want to use by clicking on the "style pane" Step four: Once you have chosen the style you want to use, it will be applied to your work. Why Should You Apply Styles to Your Template? You should always want your audience to be engaged in your work. Styles with prefect the work you put on paper, everything will be much more organized. Using styles in your work is very important due to the fact that you want your work to be at a professional level and applying styles will just do that. How To Use A Template How do you use a template To download and use Professor Brieley's memo template in Microsoft Word, you would have to download the memo template to your computer. First step: Go to Blackboard, click on English 304, then go to Projects, click on project two : Using Templates and Styles and then click resources. Step two: You want to click on the memo template Professor Brieley provided and replace all of his context with your information. Step three: Once you have completed your memo template, you want to save it to your computer.

Transcript: Styles and Memos Wesley Towner Styles and Memos Intro This presentation will cover what styles are and how to apply them as well as how to use the memo template for ENG-304 Styles Microsoft Word has a tool called styles. Styles are formatting tools that will help the author maintain cohesive structure throughout their work. Styles But are styles useful? Usefulness When it comes to correspondence in a professional setting having a properly structured and formatted document is extremely important. The application of styles prevents mistakes in font, text size, spacing and color that can happen when manually formatting a document. Not only do styles prevent formatting mistakes but they allow the author to focus on the content of the document rather than wasting time playing with fonts or other distractions. Accessing Styles Applying styles 1) Open Microsoft Word. 2) Select the Home. 3) At the top of the word document find the styles tile and click the Expand arrow. This opens a drop down menu titled "Styles". Note: This can also be accessed using the key combination CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + S on a windows computer. 4) Highlight any text that needs to be formatted. 5) Scroll through the styles menu to find the appropriate option for the highlighted section and click the style. This will apply the selected style to any highlighted text. Memo Templates Many companies and organizations use their own templates for professional correspondence between employees. This example is from ENG-304 at Southern Connecticut State University. Memo Templates Steps How to Access the template Black Board Open the assignment folder by clicking the title. Select ENG-304. This will bring you to the class page. Open the Resources folder. Scroll until P3: Using Class Template and Styles assignment comes up. Click Memo Template Document to download the template. Open the newly downloaded template. Steps to manipulate the template Using a Template 1.) Now that the template is open, select the File tab and click Save as. 2.) Once the document is saved, delete the text that is not needed but leave the heading alone. 3.) Fill out the heading leaving any unused rows blank. 4.) Begin the body of the memo with a short introduction that briefly addresses the topics. 5.) Using the styles options develop a professional, cohesive memo.
