Holy Spirit and the Mission of the Church Tongues of Fire HOLY SPIRIT The coming of the Holy Spirit is - The New York Times HOLY SPIRIT - The Apostles Wind and Tongues of Fire - Virgin Mary "Suddenly a noise like a strong, driving wind filled the house where Jesus' Apostles were." • The fiftieth day after Easter, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit Even though Pentecost is often referred to as the birthday of the Church, Pentecost wasn't actually the founding of the Church. It was the start of the Church's mission on Earth. The Holy spirit enlivens, sanctifies, and builds the Church. ACTS 1:15 I was right along side with the disciples, and I first-hand witnessed the coming of the Holy Spirit. Truly breathtaking! We have never seen anything like this before. It has opened up our eyes to Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit came down upon Jesus' disciples and gave them the gifts of languages. Transcript: Morgan Arroyo Lea Na Layla Stein Period 4 Pomegranate Water symbolizes purification and the sacrament of baptism in the church. The sacrament of baptism is important to Pentecost because baptism is the entrance into the Catholic faith and it washes away sin. Flames Water Pentecost Imagery Dove Wind is seen as underlying foundation of change because the flames had appeared due to a gust of wind as stated in Acts 1 and 2. The change included flames of the different dialects. In hebrew, wind and spirit are not necessarily interchangable but rather wind is another word that symbolizes the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the principal agent of the whole Church's mission, and is depicted of a dove as its visible appearance symbolizing harmlessness, purity, and ultimately peace brought to the Church. The skin of the pomegranate comes to represent the church as the seeds represent the individuals that make up the community. Wind Flames represent St. Peter, who had been graced by the 'fire' of the Holy Spirit. What had seemed to be tounges of fire had the apostles find that they were able to speak different languages.

Transcript: Pentecost The coming of the Holy spirit Once upon a time the day of Pentecost, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where the believers were sitting.They saw something looked like tongues of fire. It spread out and touched each person. It was the Holy Spirit!! The believers were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit told them. There were religious people living in Jerusalem who had come from every country in the world. When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited, because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages! In a wonder they cried out in a surprised, “These people who are talking like this are Galileans!! How can we hear them speaking in our own native languages? All of us hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things that God has done!” Amazed and Confused, they kept asking each other, “what does this mean?” But others made fun of the believers, saying, “These people are drunk!” Peter's Message Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles and in a loud voice began to speak to the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me and let me tell you what this means. These people are not drunk, as you suppose; it is only nine o’clock in the morning. Instead, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about. Listen to those words, fellow Israelites! Jesus of Nazareth was a man whose divine authority was clearly proven to you by all the miracles and wonders which God performed through him. You yourselves know this, for it happened here among you. In accordance with his own plan God had already decided that Jesus would be handed over to you; and you killed him by letting sinful men crucify him. “All the people of Israel, then, are to know for sure that this Jesus, whom you crucified, is the one that God has made Lord and Messiah!” When the people heard this, they were deeply troubled and said to Peter and the other apostles, “What shall we do, brothers?” Peter said to them, “Each one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sis will be forgiven; and you will receive God’s gift, the Holy Spirit.” Many of them believed his message and were baptized, and about to the group that day. Many miracles and wonders were being done through the apostles, and everyone was filled with awe. All the believers continued together in close fellowship and shared their belongings with one another. They would sell their property and possessions, and distribute the money among all, according to what each one needed. Day after day they met as a group in the Temple, and they had their meals together in their homes, prasing God, and enjoying the good will of all the people. I will pour out my spirit on everyone. Your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your young men will see visions, and your old men will have dreams. Yes, even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will proclaim my message. I will perform miracles in the sky above and wonders on the earth below. There will be blood, fire, and thick smoke; the sun will be darkened, and the moon will turn red as blood, before the great and glorious Day of the Lord comes. Acts 1:4-5 ~ On one occasion with them, he gave this command: " Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5. For John Baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the holy spirit Acts 2:1-3 Acts 2:1-3 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
