Transcript: Translation as Attention: Absorption, Obsession, and Distraction in Contemporary Accounts of Translation Introduction Attention is defined in this paper as “the selective filtering and processing of sensory information” (Montemayor and Haroutioun Haladjian 2015, 2). Introduction Absorption Conscious attention can be defined as the following: Absorption "A basic (that is to say, irreducible) kind of attention is intending, when one sets oneself to act, a straining or exertion that fills the ‘psychic space’ with resolution. Other basic kinds of attention are introspection, a distinctive manner of attending to the world and not quasi-perceptual awareness of one’s inner life, and mindfulness, a kind of rehearsing or retentive attention.” (Ganeri 2018, 3) “It is analogous to listening to another, itself a kind of attention. So empathy, one’s awareness of another in their otherness, is an attentional state, a fact that is phenomenologically evident if one reflects on what it is like oneself to be that other on whom another’s attention falls.” (Ganeri 2018, 3-4) Edith Grossman refers to translation as “essentially auditory, something immediately available to other people, as opposed to a silent solitary process. I think of the author’s voice and the sound of the text, then of my obligation to hear both as clearly and profoundly as possible”. (Grossman 2010, Kindle edition) Translating Don Quixote, Grossman wonders: “Would I be able to catch at least a glimpse of Cervantes’ mind as I listened to his prose and began to live with his characters, and would I be able to keep that image intact as I searched for equivalent voices in English? On occasion, at a certain point in the translation of a book, I have been lucky enough to hit the sweet spot, when I can begin to imagine that the author and I have started to speak together—never in unison, certainly, but in a kind of satisfying harmony. In those instances it seems as if I can hear the author’s voice in my mind speaking in Spanish at the same time that I manage to find a way to speak the work in English.” (Grossman 2010, Kindle edition) Precision Precise, focused attention can be equated with “effortful” attention; that is, attention “guided by a feeling of wilful selection” (Montemayor and Haroutioun Haladjian 2015, 27). For example: “The action of listening to sounds differs from the conscious activity of listening to Beethoven, and one can experience the activity either by effortfully monitoring aspects of the song, or by simply enjoying those components automatically, based on previous expertise.” (Montemayor and Haroutioun Haladjian 2015, 10) Within translation, this is akin to targeted revisions. Michael Hofmann writes: “I get some sort of draft out as quickly as possible, put the German away, and revise, endlessly. Ten times, twenty times—more. […] I know that I’ve dwelt on difference and play and irresponsibility, but I am overwhelmingly a careful and diligent worker.” (Hofmann 2014, Kindle edition) “Often it is only by revisiting a sentence again and again that we can get our brains to stop repeating the thought patterns that brought us to solutions previously tried and rejected, opening up access to a new set of possibilities.” (Bernofsky 2013, 226) “There is rarely a single perfect solution to any given translation problem, and so the process of revising involves trying out dozens of potential solutions until one of them begins to shimmer in that peculiar way that marks it as the best possible choice.” (Bernofsky 2013, 225) This form of attention is similar to the state of possession described by certain translators: “A translator that would write with any force or spirit of an original must never dwell on the words of his author. He ought to possess himself entirely and perfectly comprehend the genius and sense of his author, the nature of the subject, and the terms of the art or subject treated of.” (Dryden 1680 [2004], 31). Possession/Obsession In addition to effortful attention, there is also effortless attention: “Effortless attention, then, seems necessarily to be a form of conscious attention—an overlap between phenomenal consciousness and access conscious attention—because the phenomenal experience of subjective effort disappears even when the complexity of the cognitive task is significant. This entails a substantial amount of high-quality epistemic processing, intense engagement in the task with the concomitant experience of pleasure or flow, and little or no self-awareness.” (Montemayor and Haroutioun Haladjian 2015, 136) “True to my original instincts (or perhaps my inherent laziness and impatience) and to the subsequent amazement of those to whom I confessed my hubristic ploy, I translated the book as I read it for the first time.
