Money: although Mathilde's husband makes enough to support both of them, money is still an issue. Since they can't afford to replace the diamond necklace, Mathilde and her husband had to borrow money and work for 10 years in order to buy a replacement. When Mathilde asks to borrow the diamond necklace from Madame Forestier, she replies without hesitation. We can anticipate that the necklace was fake. Main Characters (cont.) After losing a borrowed diamond necklace from her friend, Mathilde chooses not to inform the owner and instead resorts to spend 10 years of her life paying off the necklace. She eventually finds out, from Madame Forestier, that the necklace was just a phony. 1810 "All the attaches of the Cabinet wished to waltz with her" (Maupassant) "With frowsy hair, skirts askew and red hands, she talked loud while washing the floor with great swishes of water" (Maupassant). Main Characters Conflicts When Malthilde realizes the diamond necklace is missing and goes in distress along with her husband, Monsieur Loisel. 1803 Dissatisfaction: Mathilde is unhappy with her life and marriage, and believes she was born into the wrong social class. Monsieur Loisel: the husband of Mathilde. He is the clerk of the Ministry of Public Institution. Complications Main Characters (cont.) Madame Forestier: a former classmate of Mathilde. She lends Mathilde the diamond necklace, that is later lost. Internal: Mathilde longed for a life where can afford all the beautiful materialistic things she desires. She feels that her life is bare without experiencing any of the delicacies and luxuries that of the upper class. Basic Situation Mathilde Loisel: the main character. She is the unhappy wife of Monsieur Loisel and she never seems to be contented with her life. Diction "She fastened it round her throat, outside her high-necked waist, and was lost in ecstasy at her reflection in the mirror" (Maupassant). Setting: Time & Place After 10 years of borrowing money and taking on multiple jobs, Mathilde finally decides to come clean to Madame Forestier.
