Transcript: Motivation : Likert items are used to measure respondents’ attitudes to a particular question or statement. To analyse the data it is usually coded as follows. • 1 = Strongly disagree • 2 = Disagree • 3 = Neutral • 4 = Agree • 5 = Strongly agree One must recall that Likert-type data is ordinal data, i.e. we can only say that one score is higher than another, not the distance between the points. Likert scale Likert scale data Parametric analysis of ordinary averages of Likert scale data is justifiable by the Central Limit Theorem, analysis of variance techniques incude; • t-test. • ANOVA. • regression procedures Inference A Likert scale is composed of a series of four or more Likert-type items that represent similar questions combined into a single composite score/variable. Likert scale data can be analyzed as interval data, i.e. the mean is the best measure of central tendency. The most appropriate measure of is the mode the most frequent responses, or the median. The best way to display the distribution of responses i.e. (% that agree, disagree etc) is to use a bar chart. To test hypotheses one must initially think carefully about the questions you are trying to answer. Once you have identified your hypotheses, you will have a dependent variable, that which is measured and your independent variable/s that which defines your groups. Transcript: The leader is commanding and uses rewards to motivate and encourage the employees. The leader does this to make sure the employees perform appropriately. The little communication and listening is limited to what the boss wants to hear and know. There is also little teamwork and little decision-making. Exploitative Authoritative The leader doesn’t completely trust the employees but will listen to ideas and opinions. Motivation is driven by rewards and involvement in the organization, competition between employees might drive the motivation. The higher levels have responsibilities to reach organizational goals and there is a good amount of teamwork. Major decisions are mostly made. Consultative The leaders let everyone participate and let the lower levels of the organization make decisions. All levels work together and psychologically feel closer together. There is a lot of teamwork and communication present. All levels have equal amount of responsibilities for the organization to reach its goals. Employees are motivated by the economic rewards. The leader has low concern for the people. The high levels of management have lots of responsibilities but low levels have no responsibilities. There is no communication or teamwork. Threats and other fear methods are used for motivation and performance level. The psychological state of the employees are ignored and not a concern. Work Groups Effective Management Rensis Likert's styles of management and leadership Participative Dr. Rensis Likert studied many different management systems and styles. He researched the human behavior in different types of organizations and leadership styles. He also examined how to achieve the best productivity and labor. Likert identified four main styles of leadership that helped with decision-making and to determine the extent people were involved in making the decision. -The motivation to work should not be implied by the old system of threats and rewards but by modern principles and techniques -Employees should be able to maintain and keep their values, desires, need, and self worth -There should be strong and effective work groups, so the objectives of the organization can be achieved -Work groups should support and respect each other -There should be good relationships between employees.
