Transcript: Internships VS Volunteering Volunteer and Volunteering Quick Recap An INTERN: A student or trainee who works in an organization, in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification. An INTERNSHIP is a professional learning experience offered by an employer to , interns, to work at an organization for a fixed, limited period of time .Internships may be part-time or full-time. Internships in most sectors are paid. However, for nonprofits - internships can be unpaid if they meet federal and state requirements. Internship Test? Volunteers typically help a nonprofit, while an interns use this professional opportunity to grow in their career path. The purpose of both roles are different. Volunteers can use their existing skill sets to support an organization, while interns use these experiences as training for future career opportunities. HR Training The Department of Labor USA has laid out specifically guidelines on how an internship should be designed. While it strictly mandates that for-profit organizations pay interns for the duration of their internships, it recognizes that different rules must be created for nonprofit organizations (which are still under review). However, it is recommended that nonprofit organizations follow these guidelines to design an internship program. VOLUNTEER is someone who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertakes a task. VOLUNTEERING refers to hours of service performed for an organization for “civic, charitable, or humanitarian reasons, without promise, expectation, or receipt of compensation for services rendered.” Expectations: Volunteer and volunteering is an unpaid position where the individual freely partakes to satisfy his or her personal goals. Opportunities for volunteer and volunteering are available depending upon the organization. Volunteer Vs Intern Intern & Internship Is the intern provided with tasks that are not equivalent to a paid job? Internships vs Volunteer programs - which works for your organization? Tips & Tricks Are interns provided with training of the organization facilities, safety, and operations similar to an educational environment? Will the intern gain experience in the organization that may further his/her agenda? Are tasks given to the interns specifically different and do not hinder task of paid employees? Are interns told that there is no guarantee hiring after completion of internship? Are interns told that their work is not entitled to compensation of wages? Internship Guidelines The internship: Is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment Benefits the intern The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff The employer derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship Tips & Tricks continued It may be appropriate to classify the intern as a "trainee" – which is a special category of employees in federal wage and hour regulations for which the minimum wage does not apply. Trainees do not have to be paid minimum wage (and thus may be unpaid or receive a "stipend" that amounts to less than minimum wage). Areas of Caution Be aware that if your nonprofit considers its interns "volunteers," but pays them a "stipend," paying the stipend may cause the Department of Labor to classify the intern as an employee. Employees must be paid at least minimum wage and are subject to withholdings. Internship Programs Tips & Tricks Think about the future Document expectations Manage the risk of accidents/injuries to the intern Clarify the workplace policies that apply to your interns INTERN AND INTERNSHIP INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS VOLUNTEERS VS. Great with students, workers, family, etc. For example: With games like Jeopardy and Family Feud, players can pick practically any answers. The person who is running the game will have to have all of the answers in order to determine if players are correct or not. However, with a game like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the players only have a choice between answers, A, B, C, or D. Therefore, when the player decides their answer, the person running the game clicks it, and the game will tell them whether they are right or wrong.

Transcript: New Hire Training Sexual Harassment Training Sexual Harassment 1. Why is it important? 2. Title VII of Civil Rights Act 3. EEOC 4. Social Media 5. What constitutes sexual harassment? 6. Who is affected? 7. How do we prevent? 8. What else do we do? Why is talking about sexual harassment important? 1 You need to know about this subject because: We all have the right to fair treatment at work Sexual harassment harms everyone, not just the victim It undermines the trust and respect necessary for a productive work environment Sexual harassment is not just a woman’s issue—men and women on every level may be either harassers or victims What's the Law? 2 Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, or sexual orientation. The courts have interpreted sexual harassment as a form of sex discrimination that is prohibited under Title VII. State laws that address civil rights and fair employment practices also prohibit sexual harassment in the workplace. All forms of sexual harassment are illegal and cannot be tolerated. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission What's the law? 3 U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or EEOC, defines sexual harassment as sexual conduct that is unwelcome, harmful, or illegal.  Unwelcome conduct can include: sexual advances, requests for sexual favors verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature displays of sexually explicit or suggestive materials.  Harmful conduct can harm either the physical or emotional health of the victim, or of witnesses to the conduct. This can also negatively affect the atmosphere of the workplace in general.  All forms of sexual harassment are illegal and cannot be tolerated. Social Media and Harassment 4 Inappropriate materials can constitute harassment whether they’re communicated face-to-face or electronically. Employees should be careful not to post offensive messages on social networking sites or to transmit sexually suggestive messages by e-mail, cell phone, or other electronic means. If it’s inappropriate conduct in person, it’s inappropriate in any form of electronic media and may constitute unlawful workplace harassment. Examples of inappropriate conduct include: A sexual comment about an employee’s photo posted on a social networking site Repeated text messages asking for a date Offensive photos or videos sent via e-mail or cell phone Sexual innuendo in a tweet, text, or email Quid Pro Quo 5 Quid Pro Quo translates to “this for that.” The victim is the target of a tangible employment action because he or she refuses a sexual request. Examples might include: Being fired Being passed over for a promotion or a raise Being given less desirable work assignments by a person in authority for refusing his or her sexual advances Being promised a raise or other job benefit in return for sexual favors Quid Pro Quo focuses on the harm done to the victim rather than on the specific conduct of the harasser.  The employer is automatically liable if a supervisor takes tangible employment action - a Quid Pro Quo situation. Hostile Work Environment Hostile Work Environment is conduct that is either severe or pervasive, or both, that constitutes a hostile work environment. The offensive conduct might be aimed specifically at certain persons, or it might be more generalized throughout the workplace.  This kind of regular and repeated conduct can include items displayed in the workplace that unreasonably interfere with job performance or that create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. Examples of a hostile work environment include:  Posting sexually explicit pictures, calendars, graffiti, or objects around the work area Regularly using dirty words Making sexual jokes Using obscene gestures Making rude comments of a sexual nature Who is affected? 6 Clients and customers can also be guilty of committing sexual harassment against employees.  Harassers and victims can be members of the same sex. Sexual harassment laws and policies also affect those who experience the harassment. These include:  Direct targets of sexual harassment—for example, someone who is constantly subjected to a co-worker’s sexual advances is a direct target of sexual harassment and, therefore, a victim of an unlawful act.  Bystanders and witnesses may also be considered to be sexual harassment victims. If you witness acts of sexual harassment against a co-worker, you may also be affected by harassment and may be protected under the law. Anyone in the organization, at any level!! How do we prevent it? 7 Know and comply with workplace policy on sexual harassment! Ask your supervisor or HR if you have any questions about your responsibilities.  Address the incident of sexual harassment immediately. Report any incident that you reasonably believe is offensive, whether you are the direct target or not. Respond directly to anyone who is committing sexual harassment, making it clear that

Now you can make any subject more engaging and memorable
