Transcript: Understanding Coral Reefs: The Rainforests of the Sea Coral reefs represent some of the most vibrant and biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. Composed of calcium carbonate structures built by coral polyps, these underwater formations are essential for marine life and play a crucial role in ocean health. Their rich biodiversity supports countless species, making them vital to both ecological balance and human activities. Habitat for Marine Life Coral reefs serve as essential habitats for a vast array of marine species, including fish, invertebrates, and algae, supporting biodiversity and complex food webs. Coastline Protection Coral reefs protect coastlines by absorbing wave energy, reducing the impact of storms and preventing erosion, thus safeguarding coastal communities. Importance of Coral Reefs Support for Fishing Industries The fishing industry relies on healthy coral reefs for sustainable fish populations, which are crucial for food security and local economies. Contribution to Tourism Coral reefs attract millions of tourists each year, providing opportunities for recreation, education, and research, which boosts local economies. Biodiversity Hotspots Coral reefs support approximately 25% of all marine species, providing critical habitat and food sources for countless organisms. Economic Significance Conclusion The economic value of coral reefs is estimated to be over $375 billion annually, contributing to fisheries, tourism, and coastal protection. Conservation Importance Effective conservation strategies can help restore damaged reefs and enhance their resilience against climate change, ensuring their survival for future generations. Free Coral Reef PowerPoint Template A visually striking template designed for presentations on coral reefs and marine conservation. Utilizing the Coral Reef Presentation Template This template provides a structured approach to effectively communicate the importance of coral reefs. It features dedicated sections for essential facts, visuals, and timelines, making it easier to convey complex information clearly and engagingly. Timeline of Coral Reef Conservation Efforts Key initiatives and milestones in preserving coral ecosystems. Effects of Pollution and Overfishing Impact of Climate Change In addition to climate change, pollution from land runoff introduces harmful chemicals and sediment into marine environments, smothering corals and disrupting their delicate ecosystems. Overfishing and destructive fishing methods further exacerbate the decline of reef health, leading to imbalances in marine biodiversity. Coral reefs are increasingly endangered due to climate change, which causes rising ocean temperatures and leads to coral bleaching. This phenomenon occurs when stressed corals expel the algae living in their tissues, resulting in a loss of color and critical energy sources. 1990 2010 2020 2000 The establishment of the first marine protected areas to safeguard critical reef habitats. International agreements and partnerships formed to combat overfishing and promote sustainable practices. Restoration projects initiated to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs affected by bleaching events. Emergence of citizen science programs that engage local communities in coral monitoring and conservation efforts.

Transcript: GIVE US RAISES NOT ROSES Jennifer Martinez, Jorgia Jackson, Munira Alami Discrimination on the basis of sex has a long history in the United States, and it keeps women's salaries lower and gives women fewer job opportunities. There is and has been inequality against women in their day to day workplace ever since women were given the opportunity to work along side men. Women in the work place get paid 78% of what men get paid. In a study women received more positive comments (excellent, terrific) than the men, but only 6% of those women as opposed to 15% of the men, were mentioned as potential partner material. Women in Power 4 Loss Pedals off objectifying 1. Respect If you belittle/ discredit people , you have no respect for them or yourself because it shows your character. 2. Realistic Expectations All the advertisement that is objectifying men and women is messing with our expectation on how we should look or act and in reality we will be disappointed. 3. Rational Reasoning Advertisement uses objectification to cloud our judgement making us not think in a logical way. 4. A Culture of Freedom Equality is becoming based off looks, which makes us lose our freedom. Sexual HarassMe WHO CARES ABOUT THIGH GAPS WE CARE ABOUT PAY GAPS There many ways to help rise up on the ladder of the workplace and be able to receive equal pay. The ACLU has come with The Paycheck Fairness Act which is a bill that will update the Equal Pay Act of 1963 by including : requiring employers to demonstrate that wage differentials are based on factors other than sex; prohibiting retaliation against workers who inquire about their employers’ wage practices or disclose their own wages; permitting reasonable comparisons between employees within clearly defined geographical areas to determine fair wages; strengthening penalties for equal pay violations; directing the Department of Labor to assist employers and collect wage-related data; and authorizing additional training for Equal Employment Opportunity Commission staff to better identify and handle wage disputes. The gender pay gap affects all women, but for women of color, the pay gap is worse. Asian American women’s salaries show the smallest gender pay gap, at 90 percent of white men’s earnings. Hispanic women’s salaries show the largest gap, at 54 percent of white men’s earnings. Full-time workers one year after college graduation , almost all of them were childless; women were paid just 82 percent of what their male coworkers were paid. Mothers were significantly less likely to be recommended for hire, and if they were considered they were offered $11,000 less in starting salary, than women without children. Fathers were not penalized at all. Underrated Mothers and Unqualified Races The best place in the United States for pay equity is Washington, D.C., where women were paid 91 percent of what men were paid in 2013. At the other end of the spectrum is Louisiana, the worst state in the country for pay equity, where women were paid just 66 percent of what men were paid. Women typically will earn about 90 percent of what men are paid until they hit 35. After that women are typically paid 75–80 percent of what men are paid. Media can be very objectifying FREE THE PINK Workplace harassment is another form of unlawful discrimination. Harassment can include unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. Employers must not only give women and men equal pay and opportunities, they must also resolve any sexual harassment situations that are known. In a Study 54% had experienced some form of workplace sexual harassment. 27% of the 272 respondents experienced harassment by their colleague, while 17% were harassed by their superior. 79% of the victims are women; 21% were men. 12% had received threats of termination if they did no comply with the requests of the sexual harassers.
