Transcript: GROUP POWERPOINT PRESENTATION Inmate at Toronto South Detention Center tests positive for COVID-19 By: Michaela, Jaylynn, Tanya, Tasnim, Lindsay, Victoria Tanya Michaela Jaylynn Victoria Lindsay Tasnim Summary of News Story 1 Ontario reported 100 new cases of COVID-19, along with five more deaths related to the illness earlier on Wednesday March 25th . A statement from the ministry sent out Wednesday said that an inmate at the Toronto South Detention Centre tested positive for COVID-19. The ministry was informed by local public health that the inmate was a possible COVID-19-related case upon admission, and was immediately placed in isolation. All infection prevention steps have been taken by the TSDC, and screening procedures for respiratory illness will continue until further notice. Why did your group choose this story? What about it appealed to the group? 2 As a group we choose this story because it is an human rights issue regarding how actions of others can affect people in a negative way. The topic we choose is a huge world wide issue going on which is called coronavirus also known as covd-19 which does not have any cure as of yet and is spread through contact or it being airborne. This virus appealed to the group because the information is still relevant till this day. No one knows anything more about it other than the symptoms and how it can be spread. This causes concern and appeals because we don't know if having contact with others like touching and talking can have you exposed or if you are a super spreader which is when you have the virus you are able to make 8 people sick at once which leads to health concerns without a cure. Does this story connect to any other current social justice movements/projects happening right now? 3 This story connects to the “flatten the curve” social justice movement because of how we deal and act on behalf of the collective. The inmate that was tested positive for COVID-19 was put into isolation and was “social distancing” from other inmates. Ontario has planned to release certain inmates that are nearing the end of their sentences to curb the risk of further spread of the disease. This in turn will help “flatten the curve”. Identify 2-3 main points about the story that relate to the COURSE CONTENT 4 This story presents us with an enhanced sight of how an outbreak such as COVID-19 and other diseases can affect the lifestyles of many individuals in jails. While being held in jail, it's known for a possible impact of receiving something while being incarcerated. Inmates are and could be at a greater vulnerability to COVID-19, which can be concerning for someone’s health/medical conditions. Ontario institutions have implemented needle exchange programs for inmates to do drugs safely. Measures are being taken for inmates to perform illegal substances and the same should be completed to support and prevent diseases and illnesses during pandemics. Although inmates are a primary concern of the diseases , Correction Officer’s are at risk as well. CO’s have to take precautions when dealing and having interaction with inmates. They have key relationships not only with inmates themselves but also including their co-workers, treatment staff, along with prison administration. Is there another outcome that you think could help change the circumstances of your story? 5 This story can give us a better insight on how jails deal with outbreaks and disease and how they can contain things like this from going any further. Some things that can be implemented in these facilities to decrease the chances of an inmate catching the virus is in cooperating more hand washing breaks as most facilities don’t even have working sinks. The separation of inmates can also be a good way to stop the spread of disease as most people are living on top of eachother in these facilities, separating those with no symptoms, those who are at a higher risk, and those who have symptoms are a good way the spread can be stopped and contained. Finally, fewer people being in these systems or less people entering these facilities at a time is another way it can be prolonged from coming into contact with anyone. What have you learned? 6 This story has taught myself and the rest of my group members that this article is a human rights matter. This article informs us and the public that there has been an inmate at Toronto South detention center that has tested positive for COVID-19 and in currently being isolated to reduce the spread of the virus. Another idea that my group and I have also learned is that there are some people that can be “super spreaders.” Super spreaders are individuals who are a potential risk to everyone else in society. This one individual can make eight people sick at once if they contain the virus. We learned that COVID-19 is called the coronavirus because it is not just one virus, it is a mix of multiple viruses that convert into one and originally unfolded from animals and is possible to concert

Transcript: 1983 Americans are written 130 million prescriptions for drugs containing hydrocodone. 1893 2006 Acetaminophen is introduced to the U.S., under the name Tylenol. It’s prescription-only, in a child’s liquid dose. The adult version arrives six years later. 1920 The German pharmaceutical company Knoll synthesizes hydrocodone, an opiate painkiller chemically similar to codeine. 1978 1971 A researcher for the U.S. Bureau of Social Hygiene reports that although hydrocodone is an excellent painkiller and cough suppressant, users build up a tolerance very slowly, inducing them to become addicted. Vicodin Knoll introduces Vicodin, five milligrams of hydrocodone with 500 milligrams of acetaminophen, in the U.S. Pure hydrocodone joins the Schedule II list of narcotics, along with opium and morphine, with passage of the Controlled Substances Act. But in combination with other drugs, it’s considered a less stringently regulated Schedule III drug. 2008 Emergency-room reports involving hydrocodone increase 500 percent since 1990. That same year, the FDA recommends tighter warnings on drugs containing acetaminophen over liver-damage fears. Vicodin Timeline 2002 Generic Vicodin available. 1934 On June 30, a federal advisory panel votes to recommend the FDA ban Vicodin. 2009 1955 Abbott plans to sell a controlled-release version of Vicodin— but fails to gain FDA approval. Great with students, workers, family, etc. For example: With games like Jeopardy and Family Feud, players can pick practically any answers. The person who is running the game will have to have all of the answers in order to determine if players are correct or not. However, with a game like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the players only have a choice between answers, A, B, C, or D. Therefore, when the player decides their answer, the person running the game clicks it, and the game will tell them whether they are right or wrong.
