Learning Targets Learning Targets Woods Woods Woods are the lowest lofted clubs in the golf bag and as of that they produce the longest distance in a shot. The most players carry 2-3 woods in their bag. History of Woods History of Woods Woods used to be made of actual woods, most likely persimmon wood. Now they are almost always made of metal. Metal produces a longer distance in a shot than wood. The first "metalwood" was made by the company TaylorMade in 1979. Stance Stance When hitting the ball with a wood you want the ball to be farther up in your stance. Make sure to keep your shoulders square and remember to swing only as fast as you can, a slower, controlled swing is better than an uncontrolled, fast one. Most commonly, people carry a 1, 3, and 5 wood. Sometimes the 5 wood is replaced by a hybrid club. The one wood is almost always called a driver for its ability to "drive" the ball down the fairway. Types of Woods Types of Woods Irons Irons Irons take up the most space in your bag and have the most variety of any club. Most players carry between seven and nine irons in their bag. The lower the number on the iron, the longer the ball will go because of the lower face angle. Your stance when hitting with an iron should change slightly with each club. The higher the number, the closer you want the ball to be in the middle of your stance. When you swing you want to make a small divot after you hit the ball, not before. Stance Stance Irons 2-4 are often considered to be "long" irons. This is because irons have a increasingly longer shaft the lower the number you go. These irons hit farther than short irons and wedges because of the lower face angle. Long Irons Long Irons Irons 7-9 are considered to be "short" irons. They have a shorter shaft, and produce a higher ball flight. These clubs do not hit the ball as far. Wedges are used to hit the ball a very short distance, often over obstacles. Wedges are also often used to "chip" the ball onto the green. Short Irons and Wedges Short Irons and Wedges Putters Putters Putters are used to roll the ball across the green into the hole. They are the shortest club in the bag. Putters also have features that no other club can have, like an alignment line an bent shafts. When putting you want to have your feet closed in and your shoulders forward. The ball should be slightly in front of the middle of your stance. Bring the putter only a few inches for your swing and forward only a few inches after. Stance Stance When putting it is very easy to hit the ball too far, or not enough. Then you have to take more strokes than you should've. It's important to visualize the stroke in your head before you do it to make sure you do it right the first time. Distance Control Distance Control There are two common types of putters, blade putters and mallet putters. Mallet putters have larger and more eloaborate designs than blade putters. Blade putters are smaller and straighter. Types of Putters Types of Putters Mallet Blade 1. If the iron is a long iron it has a longer or shorter shaft? 2. A 1-Wood is called what? 3.
