Transcript: Education today has come a long way since the colonial days. Education was to further religious goals and mainly for wealthy white males. Pioneers such as Mary McLeod Bethune and Horace Mann help to lead the fight for equal educational rights which turned into federal laws passed to provide an equal opportunity for all people to learn. In recent years that their has been an increase in the push to educate our youngest Americans. Today in the 21st. century our President has started a Preschool Initiative that will provide a formal style education for children birth to 5 years old. Research based studies still show today that children who has access to an early childhood education to do better and go farther in education, career choices and goals and in life in general. The early 80's The “Back to Basics” reform led us to “A Nation at Risk”. 1983, in 1987 we began to push the literacy programs which in turn led to the voucher program in 1996. The vouch program gave us a sense of choice and those choices became public charter schools, technology in the classroom, and standardized testing. Without a permanent plan in place our Nation is at risk every four years of changing the way we reach the goal of free education for all. Without having a compromising source of income (agreeing political parties) to fund our educational system definitely has a negative impact on our progress in our “Race to the Top” goal in education. The President's initiative has to include all children regardless if their state participate in the shared guidelines to be funded by the government. program success and serve the purpose of it's goal of "free education for all", The right to a free education is constitutional but education falls under the "general welfare" clause. “general welfare” clause gives the federal government assumed power to initiate educational activity in its own right and to participate jointly with states, agencies and individuals in educational activities.
