Transcript: Honor Defined What does commitment mean to you? The 30th Commandant, Carl E. Mundy Jr., wrote in a 1992 memorandum "Marines are held to the highest standards of personal conduct. The Nation expects that from us. The personal and professional conduct, decency, integrity, and accountability of Marines must be beyond reproach. This is a non-negotiable principle." What does Honor mean to you? Commitment Defined Generation after generation of American men and women have given special meaning to the title United States Marine. These same men and women live by a set of enduring Core Values which forms the bedrock of their character. The Core Values give Marines strength and regulate their behavior; they bond the Marine Corps into a total force that can meet any challenge. Honor. The bedrock of our character. The quality that guides Marines to exemplify the ultimate in ethical and moral behavior; never to lie, cheat, or steal; to abide by an uncompromising code of integrity; to respect and concern for each other. The quality of maturity, dedication, trust, and dependability that commits Marines to act responsibly; to be accountable for actions; to fulfill obligations; and to hold others accountable for their actions. COMMANDANT’S STATEMENT ON CORE VALUES OF UNITED STATES MARINES Marine Corps Core Values Honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions: What does courage mean to you? Commitment Why Are Core Values Important? Reaffirm these Core Values and ensure they guide your performance, behavior, and conduct every minute of every day. C.E. MUNDY, JR. General, U.S. Marine Corps Commandant of the Marine Corps Courage Commitment is the spirit of determination found in every Marine. It is what compels Marines to serve our nation and the Corps, and to continue on when others quit. Commitment doesn't take breaks and it cannot be faked. It measures and proves one's desire, dedication and faithfulness. Becoming a United States Marine represents the highest level of commitment. The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery. Generation after generation of American men and women have given special meaning to the term United States Marine. They have done so by their performance on and off the battlefield. Feared by enemies, respected by allies, and loved by the American people, Marines are a "special breed." This reputation was gained and is maintained by a set of enduring Core Values. These values form the cornerstone, the bedrock, and the heart of our character. They are the guiding beliefs and principles that give us strength, influence our attitudes, and regulate our behavior. They bond our Marine Family into a total force that can meet any challenge. Courage. The heart of our Core Values, courage is the mental, moral, and physical strength ingrained in Marines to carry them through the challenges of combat and the mastery of fear; to do what is right; to adhere to a higher standard of personal conduct; to lead by example, and to make tough decisions under stress and pressure. It is the inner strength that enables a Marine to take that extra step. Honor Courage Defined A code of personal integrity, honor guides those who do the right thing when no one is looking. It is not only a duty, but also a distinction, as those who possess honor are held in honor. It's found in one's beliefs, but exhibited through one's actions. Marines are held to the highest of standards, ethically and morally. Marines are expected to act responsibly in a manner befitting the title they've earned. Commitment. The spirit of determination and dedication within members of a force of arms that leads to professionalism and mastery of the art of war. It leads to the highest order of discipline for the unit and self; it is the ingredient that enables 24 hour a day dedication to Corps and Country; pride; concern for others; and an unrelenting determination to achieve a standard of excellence in every endeavor. Commitment is the value that establishes the Marine as the warrior and citizen others strive to emulate. No group functions well unless all group members "buy in" to the ideals and goals of the group. A common set of values to which every Marine adheres to the best of his or her abiliity gives us the common ground to build strong teams. By LCPL Triana When other principles are tested, it's courage that prevents them from crumbling. It isn't ignoring fear, but being stronger than fear. Courage is the guardian of all other values. It is there when times are toughest, when difficult decisions have to be made. It takes the form of mental, physical and ethical strength, and is found in the backbone of every Marine. A pledge or promise; obligation

CONTRIBUTION We believe in helping where help is needed, even in far-away places, whether it is needed by an individual, an organisation, an environmental project or an entire community; we respond to need as effectively as we can with our abilities and our resources. COMPANY We believe that the most efficient way to organise people and resources for our activities is through a for-profit company; it allows for the pooling of resources and the dispersal of risk, and it encourages innovation COMMUNITY We believe that our colleagues, our volunteers and our partners, who make up our multi-national community, determine our success. We recognise that each individual has a unique ability to contribute, which we must nurture.
