Transcript: Alternative Medicine - Treatment FAITH HEALING INDIA Faith healing used mostly with problems caused by the supernatural. “These include spirit possession, witchcraft, breaking of religious taboos, divine retribution, and the capture of the soul by a spirit” (Kar 730) It also includes the notion of Karma. Two separate studies: One based on women who were affected by Karma, the other focusing on mental illness patients. Mental illness patients turned to faith healing first, through prayer and offering, as they believed disease was a product of black magic or sorcery. Nitya believed Karma was the cause of her cancer, so acceptance and belief that “God can do no wrong” (Anand 826) allowed for her healing process to begin. AFRICA Faith Healing is primarily turned to when dealing with mental illness, which is most likely the doing of witchcraft. In order to complete faith healing, there are animal sacrifices in native religions, and exorcisms in the Islamic faith. Islamic faith healing treatments rely heavily on the reading of Qur'an verses and natural blessed products such as water, honey, salt, and oil. Treatment in native religious groups varies from community therapy (includes rehabilitation, permissiveness, democratization, and communalism), to word-magic (this is based mostly off of oral traditions). LATIN AMERICA The focus of healers in the two articles is more on treating physical illnesses, like tumors and clinical illnesses. “In the eyes of Spiritist healers, many of these dramatic surgeries are not intended to provide a physical remediation of problems, but rather to provide an opportunity for spiritual energy to enter and work within the body by dematerializing growths” (Winkleman 1) In Latin America those who have lower socioeconomic statuses are the ones who rely heavily on faith healing. There is a belief that dealing with the spirits within through faith healing, will allow for a release of neurochemicals into the immune system, leading to physical healing. CARIBBEAN Voodoo and Santería are major forms of faith healing in the islands. Haitian Voodoo has seven internal spirits: gwo bon anj (big good angel), ti bon anj (small good angel), nanm (soul), zetwal (star of a person), lwa mèt tèt (spirit master of one’s head), lwa rasin (binds to ancestors), and wonsiyon (spirits accompanying the lwa mèt tèt). Treatment to damage of these spirits includes earthly communication, animal sacrifice and song/dance which all gives praise to the God or gods one worships. Santería healing rituals focus more on spiritual baths (Limpieza), tearing away (Rompimiento), and petition (Rogación). When actions are performed on the body, it is thought to have the same effects on the spirit. UNITED STATES There is a large prevalence of faith healing within the religious community. “People of religious faith who pray and go to worship regularly are less likely to get sick and that when they do become ill they do better.” (Scanlon 13) Faith healing is performed through prayer or divine acts and is mainly focused on physical healing in the states. The socioeconomic status of those undergoing faith healing is relatively lower in the states. “Including prayer in CAM use may encourage health care practitioners to recognize and respect the role that religion and spirituality play in health and healing.” (Paradigms 437) Thesis Mapuche Treatment works because it: contains biological significance understands culture-bound illnesses and cultural contexts of healing serves as a way to retain cultural knowledge Biological Significance Native herbs proven to cause blood aggregation Used to treat wounds, reduce inflammation, and as an antimicrobial defense Herbal remedies most often used to treat gastrointestinal problems Holistic view Treat culture bound illness Includes natural and supernatural Understand subjectivity of illness and healing Have different areas of specialty Culture and cultural ideals enveloped in medicinal practices Today, culture is slowly disappearing with growth of globalization Environmental erosion culprit of decrease in biodiversity and cultural transmission Disappearance creates imbalance in cosmos which greatly diminishes/deletes use of herbs Greater opportunities internationally for biomedicine lead youth to stray from tradition Doctors are begining to acknowledge and perscribe traditional remedies. Transcript: Oral Exam Alternative Medicine By Alejandro Chaves :D In Western culture it is often defined as any healing practice "that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine", or "that which has not been shown consistently to be effective. What is about?? Alternative Medicine is: It's based on historical or cultural traditions, rather than a scientific basis. Any healing practice that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine. Practices may incorporate traditional medicine, folk knowledge, spiritual beliefs, or newly conceived approaches to healing. History Which revealed that in 1990 approximately 60 million Americans had used one or more complementary or alternative therapies to address health issues. Fueled by a nationwide survey published in 1993 by David Eisenberg, Despite the growth in patient demand for complementary medicine, most of the early alternative/complementary medical centers failed. Classifications Cut across more than one of the other groups; examples include Traditional Chinese medicine, Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Whole medical systems: Energy medicine: Is a domain that deals with putative and verifiable energy fields. Mind-body medicine: takes a holistic approach to health that explores the interconnection between the mind, body, and spirit. Biology-based practices: Use substances found in nature such as herbs, foods, vitamins, and other natural substances. Testing of Efficacy Many alternative therapies have been tested with varying results "Contrary to much popular and scientific writing, many alternative cancer treatments have been investigated in good-quality clinical trials, and they have been shown to be ineffective. In the same way as for conventional therapies, drugs, and interventions, it can be difficult to test the efficacy of alternative medicine in clinical trials. These studies found that, for CAM, 38.4% concluded positive effect or possibly positive (12.4%) effect, 4.8% concluded no effect, 0.69% concluded harmful effect, and 56.6% concluded insufficient evidence. An assessment of conventional treatments found that 41.3% concluded positive or possibly positive effect, 20% concluded no effect, 8.1% concluded net harmful effects, and 21.3% concluded insufficient evidence. Risks Conventional treatments are subjected to testing FOR Undesired SIDE-EFFECTS And WITH Products that Are exempt from good manufacturing practice. Transcript: Nearly forty percent of adults report using complementary and alternative medicine.(Mayo) Alternative medicine is practiced in many underdeveloped countries, and even industrialized countries such as the United States. Some physicians believe that because medicine has become so advanced, there is no reason to dwell on alternative medicine. Alternative medicine was the foundation of modern medicine. I feel that both alternative and modern medicine contribute to one another. One can not exist without the other. Alternative Medicine Practice While most medicines today require lengthy trials and tests, alternative treatments require none. The practice of alternative medicine is shared, not learned. So it can be passed down through generations of practitioners. Rather than needing to complete years of schooling and training.(Alternative) History History Proven Ryan Jasper English IV Some practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine make exaggerated claims about curing diseases, and some ask you to forgo treatment from your conventional doctor(Mayo). The use of plants as medicines predates written human history. Ineffective Ninety-five percent of the alternative treatments studied, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy and reflexology are statistically indistinguishable from placebo treatments.(Alternative) Equal Alternative Thesis: Alternative medicine is comperable to modern medicine Counter-Arguments Consequential Conclusion Arguments "Mayo" Dangerous Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist, defines alternative medicine as a “set of practices that cannot be tested, refuse to be tested, or consistently fail tests.” He has concerns that just because some “alternatives” have merit, there is the impression that the rest deserve equal consideration and respect even though most are worthless.(Alternative) My Opinion Popularity Some practices consisted of acupuncture and aroma therapy. Acupuncture is a Chinese medical practice or procedure that treats illness or provides local anesthesia by the insertion of needles at specified sites of the body. Aroma therapy is the use of fragrences to affect a persons mood or behavior. Persons Advocates of alternative medicine hold that the various methods are effective in treating a wide range of major and minor medical conditions(Alternative). Hippocrates was a Greek phyisician and was known as the father of medicine in the West, and established medicine as a discipline independent of religion. His theory centered on what he called “healing power of nature.”(Gale)
