Transcript: Ford Focus In order to calculate the highway mpg of the new Ford Focus we used our quadratic function derived from information from our mechanics. Since highway mpg is based off driving at a speed of 60mph we plugged in 60 to our equation. driving at 20mph, reached 26 miles driving at 40mph, reached 34 miles driving at 50mph, reached 32 miles Highway MPG MPG Overview According to our mechanics, the new Ford Focus had these results upon placing one gallon of gas inside: In order to calculate the city mpg of the new Ford Focus we used our quadratic function derived from information from our mechanics. Since city mpg is based off driving at a speed of 35mph we plugged in 35 to our equation. In order to find the speed at which the new Ford Focus is the most efficient, we found the vertex, or maximum point of our quadratic function. By finding the vertex of our quadratic function, we also find out the mpg at the most efficient speed. Efficiency We determined the city mpg of the new Ford Focus to be 33.5 mpg. We have determined that the new Ford Focus will acheive 26 highway mpg. Conclusion Years of research has shown us that the number of miles you can drive on a gallon of gas has a quadratic relationship with the speed you are traveling. Mechanical Data City MPG Our data has lead us to suggest that the new Ford Focus would be a very good investment and an excellent car to have in this economy because gas prices are as they are, you would not need to fill up as much, resulting in great savings. This means that the most efficient speed for the new Ford Focus is 40mph and at that speed it achieves its best possible miles per gallon at 34 mpg. We then use the numbers we got for variables a, b, and c to form our quadratic function. The quadratic function that relates the number of miles you can drive on a gallon of gas to how fast you're going is: These distance and speed combinations provided us with points that we used to work out our quadratic function relating speed of travel and miles per gallon.
