Sister Thea In her role as consultant Sr. Thea, an African-American, gave presentations across the country; lively gatherings that combined singing, gospel preaching, prayer and storytelling. Her programs were directed to break down racial and cultural barriers. She encouraged people to communicate with one another so that they could understand other cultures and races. In 1984, Sr. Thea was diagnosed with breast cancer. She prayed "to live until I die." Her prayer was answered, and Thea continued her gatherings seated in a wheelchair. In 1989, the U.S. bishops invited her to be a key speaker at their conference on Black Catholics. At the end of the meeting, at Thea's invitation, the bishops stood and sang "We Shall Overcome" with gusto.Thea lived a full life. She fought evil, especially prejudice, suspicion, hatred and things that drive people apart. She fought for God and God's people until her death in 1990. Soeren Palumbo Exodus 30:22-33 The Anointing Oil 22 Moreover, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Take also for yourself the finest of spices: of flowing myrrh five hundred shekels, and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, two hundred and fifty, and of fragrant cane two hundred and fifty, 24 and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin. 25 You shall make [a]of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. 26 With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, 27 and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, 28 and the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand. 29 You shall also consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy. 30 You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me. 31 You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. 32 It shall not be poured on [b]anyone’s body, nor shall you make any like it in [c]the same proportions; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you. 33 Whoever shall mix any like it or whoever puts any of it on a [d]layman [e]shall be cut off from his people.’” "R-Word Speech" Confirmed We receive the Holy Spirit and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. (we are mark with the sign of the cross on the forehead in oil Sister Thea Bowman Soreren Palumbo Soeren Palumbo gave a speech a about racism, and how people with a mental disability shouldn't be the center of immature students jokes. He was inspired to give this speech because of his sister This relates to Confirmation because, at Baptism our parents and God-parents accept the responsibility for us to live a God like life. But, at Confirmation, we reach the age that we can renew and accept the responsibility our self, when we reach this age it is called age of discretion. Now, we are responsible for our sins and life we decide to live. “I grew up with a younger sister who has an intellectual disability,” Palumbo says. “One of the things that bothered me mostwas people’s use of the word ‘retard’ and how that seemed to be okay in social circumstances.” -Soeren Palumbo What Happens at Confirmation? What do we Receive? a : marked by long continuance and likely to persist b : fixed in habit and unlikely to change Confirmation Abby Ellis Alec Hubrich Confirmation, a sacrament of initiation, establishes young adults as full-fledged members of the faith. This sacrament is called Confirmation because the faith given in Baptism is now confirmed and made stronger. During your Baptism, your parents and godparents make promises to renounce Satan and believe in God and the Church on your behalf. At Confirmation, you renew those same promises, this time speaking for yourself. The Holy Spirit is our connection to the Source of the story, the truth of the story, and the power of the story of Jesus. No wonder Jesus had taught that we had to be “born of water and of the Spirit” (John 3:3-37) Soeren Palumbo Speech It represents the healing of touch of Jesus Christ and symbolizes that it is a way to show comfort and that you are praying for them "R-Word Speech" Soeren Palumbo is a senior honors student at the University of Notre Dame with intentions to pursue a JD/MBA after graduation. He has worked for Special Olympics for three years and co-founded Spread the Word to End the Word in 2008. He continues to serve as the Co-Student Director
