It shimmered brilliantly, hovering over the sediment on which he stood. Coming from the spot he was guarding. There was a girl down there."(Derting 201) Quote: " The fall was long, and hard, and happened so fast that Violet could only make out the blur of green, brown, and gray on one side and the distortws icy rushing waters on the other. Transcript: 1861 Confederate States of America 1865 13th Amendment The Free Soil Party also opposed the expansion of slavery in the western territories which related to the Missouri Compromise and American Anti- Slavery Society. This society was absorbed by the Republican Party in 1854-1856. It also showed the division of parties and opinions of each. After the Presidential Election of Abraham Lincoln the South wanted a war and was ready for battle. Leading off the Civil War was the battle of Bull Run. Shortly after was the bloodiest battle in the whole war known as Antietam. Continuing the Civil War in 1863 was The Battle of Gettysburg which concluding that battle the President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which stated that all slaves are free in all states. This sparked the rebellion in the South even more. The South also wanted to fight many trials faced their way. They were running low on white soldiers since many African Americans weren't loyal to the South. Also poverty was high and money was scarce. The North also had the advantage of railroads on their side, allowing easy transportation for supplies and soldiers. This caused the South to eventually lose the Civil War. Following the 13th Amendment in 1868 congress made an act that prevented confederacy officials from holding office and gave citizenship to The Freedman Bureau, which provided equal protection under law. This becames the purpose of the 14th Amendment. The overall purpose of the 14th Amendment was to prevent another Civil War. The Kansas- Nebraska Act was mandated by "popular sovereignty," which is the idea of allowing the people to decide what laws they follow. Stephen A. Douglas (Lincoln's opponent in senator race) proposed the act. This act overturned the Missouri Compromise and strengthened the Anti- Slavery Society and Free Soilers Party. This also sparked what we know as Bleeding Kansas. 1861-1865 Civil War 1870 15th Amendment 1865 Freedman's Bureau Born on May 9, 1800 in Connecticut, John Brown became a famous abolitionist. Between 1820 and 1850, John worked a lot of vocations and moved around frequently. He also took part in the Underground Railroad, which was a system of underground routes to help escaped slaves. Brown also established the League of Gileadites which protected slaves. In 1855, he moved to Kansas and became in violent in the act. John eventually led Harpers Ferry the evening of October 16, 1859 and marched with 21 men. He attempted to raid the federal arsenal and help the slave rebellion. Brown was later seized and executed. The morals and values of the American Anti- Slavery Society were controversial and violent. The society didn't approve of the Missouri Compromise because it allowed slavery in some states. The American Anti- Slavery Society was founded by William Lloyd Garrison and Arthur Tappan. Throughout the establishment of the scoiety they had 250,000 members and 1,350 local charters. Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky and became the 16th President of the United States. Before his presidency, he served a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives and eventually became a senator for Illinois. Lincoln also opposed slavery, as did John Brown but he didn't was violence as he attempted to preserve the Union. As a weak nation began to split, the final straw was when Lincoln was elected president. All Lincoln's electoral votes came from free states, and The Confederate States of America immediatley succeeded. Lincoln did many good things for the country while he was Presdient, such as freeing slaves but never had full approval from a nation as a whole because of the Civil War. On April 14, 1865 Lincoln was assinated by John Wilkes Booth. Shortly after the conclusion of the war in 1865, Congress issued the Freedman's Bureau which helped former black slaves and poor whites in the south. The repercussion of the war left communities in ruins and destroyed the south's plantation based economy. On the contrary the slaves were provided with food, housing, medical aid, established schools, and legal assistance. 1800-1859 John Brown The Kansas- Nebraska Act sparked a series of violent political confrontations in the U.S. , invovling anti-slavery and pro- slavery ideals. This is how Kansas got the name, "Bleeding Kansas." Bleeding Kansas caused many problems and promtoed violence. It also promoted leaders to rise and take a stand, such as John Brown. 1854-1861 Bleeding Kansas 1848-1852 Free Soil Party 1868 14th Amendment Chronological Timeline Justification While the Freedman's Bureau provided homes for the slaves, during the Civil War President Abraham Lincoln established the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves but in 1865 the 13th Amendment was an official act of congress which forbid slavery in all states not just the southern ones. 1833-1870 The American Anti- Slavery Society 1854 Kansas- Nebraska Act In 1870 all men of race, color, or previous condition of
