Transcript: "Being passionate about something is the key to success; but using that passion to help others is the key to happiness." -Arnold Schwarzenegger Important Issues Purposes: *To inform students of real life scenarios in a Healthcare Setting. *To make sure students are aware of the demands of Healthcare Administration. *To help students find out if this is REALLY the profession for them. While watching this clip think about what YOU as a future Administrator of a Healthcare Facility would do when an issue with HIPAA violation occurs with your staff at fault. HIPAA establishes regulations for the use and disclosure of Protected Health Information. This is any information which concerns health status, provision of health care, or payment for health care that can be linked to an individual. It also includes any part of an individual's medical record or payment history. As an Administrator, you will have to deal with these issues as they arise. Could YOU be the person accountable to deal with these scenarios? A nurse discussing a private family members personal information in the hallway? A Nurse manager discussing a patients personal information on their cell at work? Your staff discussing private information right next to another patient? A visitor seeing confidential patient information? “They see a sense of calm that comes over a patient’s face when a medicine is administered,” The unfortunate thing is that 10 to 20 percent of addicts in medicine will actually present dead, in the call room or at home because they utilize these substances, not appreciating the potency.” -Michael Fitzsimons Administrative Director for the Substance Abuse Prevention Program As a Healthcare Administrator, you may have to confront or report substance abuse. While watching this clip, think about how you would handle a substance abuse situation. In Healthcare a situation like the one you saw happens more often then you might think. Could you be comfortable being the addressor of a substance abuse problem with one of your staff? As a Healthcare Administrator, you might have to discuss end of life decisions with a patient or family member of a patient. While watching this clip, really think about what your list of things to discuss with a patient or a family member of a patient who is terminally ill would be? What is your list? Could you be comfortable discussing these issues? Some people cant handle a stressful situation like this, but as an administrator you don't have a choice. Scenario: You are the Administrator at St. Mary's Hospital and you have just been informed by a news source that a tornado has destroyed your sister hospital and they were not prepared. Could you be calm and in charge in a situation like this? How would you prepare your staff? What types of drills would you have staff participate in? As an Administrator you will be faced with long hours (possibly being on call for 24hrs straight), and tough decisions. Scenario: It is 10pm it's your weekend off and four of the eight nurses supposed to be on staff tonight have just called in. Could you handle being woken up at all hours of the night? Talk with your neighbor and come up with three possible solutions to this scenario. How would you handle these scenarios?
