Transcript: The Importance of Early Literacy The early years are essential to literacy. While reading may come at any age, literacy cannot! The Importance of Early Literacy Every interaction with your child is a learning opportunity! A child's ability to read and write begins to develop long before entering Kindergarten. Infancy through age eight is the most important time in a child's early literacy development as they learn and develop the skills needed to be successful in school and later in life. How to start What Is It? Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they actually read and write. Research shows that children arriving at kindergarten with early literacy skills are more likely to be successful in learning to read and write. Vocabulary Development - Knowing the names of things. Narrative Skills - Being able to describe things, events, and tell stories. Letter Knowledge - Understanding that each letter is unique and has a name and sound. Print Awareness - Experience words with different forms of print, knowledge of how to handle books and how to follow words across a page. Print Motivation - Interest and enjoyment from books Phonological Awareness - Ability to hear and play with the small sounds that make up words. Key Areas Phonics Phonics is the understanding that there is a predictable relationship between the sounds of spoken language, and the letters and spellings that represent those sound in written language Five components of literacy. Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression It provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Fluency Vocabulary refers to the words children must know to communicate effectively This includes both oral and reading vocabulary. Vocabulary Comprehension is the reason for reading. If readers can read the words but do not understand or connect to what they are reading, they are not really reading Comprehension Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in words A student's skill in phonemic awareness is a good predictor of later reading success or difficulty Phonemic Awareness What can parents do? Read to your child daily. Talk about what is going on in the story - not just what the words say. Use speech that is clear and simple for your child to model. Avoid using "baby-talk." Show your child you understand them by repeating and expanding on what they say. Make them use their words. Use songs and nursery rhymes to show rhythms and patters of speech. Encourage your child to create stories of their own. Develop sight-word vocabulary - point out print in the environment such as book covers or store signs. Read Aloud A daily read aloud is probably one of the easiest ways to build early literacy skills. Talk about what you're reading - introduce characters, setting, and simple event sequences. Ask them to point out things they see and encourage them to read along if the story has a repetitive phrase such as in books like "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" by Eileen Christelow. This simple activity helps build your child's vocabulary and comprehension skills. Strategy 1 Suggested Books 1. Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault 2. 3. Blue Hat, Green Hat by Sandra Boynton A well Balanced Literacy has : A combination of phonics and whole language approaches Exposure to a variety of texts and purposes for reading Heavy Focus on authentic text Writing about reading A literacy rich environment that meets the needs of all learners A sense of community where reading is essential for all Balanced literacy classroom Learning Targets: Learning Targets: Success Criteria: I can explain the importance of read alouds and interactive writing and apply these components in my classroom. Learners will know the components of a balanced literacy classroom. Learners will understand the importance of read aloud and interactive writing in the balanced literacy classroom. Teaching Approach I Do, We Do, You Do I Do: Read Aloud We Do: Shared Reading and Interactive Writing You Do, I Help: Guided Reading and Writing You Do, I Watch: Independent Reading and Writing Teaching Approach "...the compelling issue is the development of a culturally relevant approach to teaching in general that fosters and sustains the student's desire to choose academic success in the face of so many competing options." ~Gloria Ladson-Billings The BIG Picture Multicultural books are not the same as culturally relevant books. Culturally relevant books connect to student's lives, not just to their cultural heritage. A word of caution As an educator you should: Get to know students through morning meetings, interest inventories, etc. - Use Cultural Relevance Rubric (provided) as a tool to help match students with engaging texts -During read aloud, model questioning strategies and make connections to experiences -Use texts that feature
