Transcript: If the sailor wants to travel in the same direction as the wind, then all he or she has to do is hold the sail perpendicular to the wind and let the boat be pushed from behind. The Jackson Yacht Club (JYC) is looking to build a brand new type of vessel that can harness the power of wind. RESEARCH STEP 1: STATE THE PROBLEM The parts of my boat that went right was the design of the sail and hull. The parts that went wrong was my keels/rudder.My fastest time was 2.93(first trial) and then my times got worse after that. If I did this project again, I would keep my sail and hull design, but try a different kind of keel and form of weight. STEP 4: BUILD THE ITEM Wind has to be moving against the boat at an angle of at least 40 degrees for most vessels. Angling too sharply into the wind causes the forces on the boat to become unbalanced, and moves the boat sideways in the water. STEP 3: SELECT A SOLUTION STEP 2: GENERATE IDEAS Dimensions - length:6.5 inches - width: 5.5 inches - height: 7.5 inches On a sailboat, wind blowing against the boat at an angle inflates the sail, and it forms a similar foil shape, creating a difference in pressure that pushes the sail perpendicular to the wind direction. STEP 5: EVALUATE sail needs to overcome resistance force of the water, or drag Boat Times: 1. 2.93 secs 2. 10.99 secs 3. 8.87 secs STEP 6: PRESENT RESULTS hydrofoil, high performance boats, power catamaran, rigid inflatable are known for speed buoyancy must be greater than the weight of the boat Boating Challenge
Transcript: Step 3 Frame chair 1. My Frame Chair is going to be consisting of squares as a frame and triangles for support. It is going to be similar to the eiffel tower. 2. The materials will be made out of pieces of cedar wood and nails to very strong objects. 3. It is going to show great support because of the triangles it will be able to hold something more than its own wait! 4. My structure is a frame because of the many reasons first it consists of a column and beams as it states in the dfinition. Transcript: Jamie Purpose Purpose What is the purpose of a sailboat? The purpose of a sailboat is to transport items across a body of water or to use for enjoyment. The sailboat uses the wind to power it. Problem solving Problem solving The sailboat has solved how to get from one side of land, across a body of water to the next side of land. Creation one In 1300 BC the Mesopotamia (now modern day Iraq) created the first sailboat. They made it out of wood and cloth. They created the boat because they wanted to catch the fish in the middle of the lakes and seas as well they wanted to set up trade with other cities across the lakes. The problem was that it used a lot of man power so the men got tired easily Who, where, when and its problems? Who, where, when and its problems? Creation two The Egyptians made papyrus boats in 4000 BC. The Egyptians made these boats to make shipping and transportation easier. The problem was they were small, were only good for fishing and made for short trips and they wanted to use them to transport larger items like crates The Hanse boat made in Germany is one of the most modern day boats of 2019. Complete with beds and a kitchen this boat is practically a mini house. This boat makes sailing faster and easier than ever. So far there have been no problems with this boat. Question How did it sink? question What I think hypothesis Hypothesis I think the boat sank because the boat was not heavy enough so you could have put more straws at the sides of the boat so it would stay up. procedure & materials procedure & materials we had straws, duck tape, and clean rap. Materials 05 04 03 Material we used 10 straws, one rectangle piece of duck tape, and one square piece of clean rap. materials 02 01 experiment & results experiment & results We got 16 washers on our boat. Experiment We build a boat like a square with straws on the outside and taped straws on the side of the straws that make the square and put a straw taped in the middle of the square and put clean rap around it and taped the hole boat and when we put it in the water and it held up to 16 straws. experiment What happened? conclusion & discussion conclusion & discussion conclusion conclusion discussion discussion
