Web. 01 Dec. 2015. 1915 1948 Holiday worked with her mother in New York in the late 1920s at the house of prostitution in Harlem for short time. Holiday renamed herself "Billie" after the actress Billie Dove when she began singing in local clubs. She was spotted by producer John Hammond while performing in a Harlem Jazz club and began her journey. in 1935 Holiday was in her first commercial "Your Mother's Son-In-Law" , she was in her first film named Symphony in Black. Billie Holiday had a huge impact on Jazz itself, her voice projected that Jazz feeling and as she sang and smiled it seemed as though she strongly understood how to express it through her music. I strongly believe that Billie Holiday is a hero because she became, in her time, one of America's finest and most influential jazz singers. Decisions/Lessons Biography PowerPoint Presentation Quotes 1959 Occupation: Jazz Musician, Singer-Songwriter Billie Holiday (1915-1959) Impact on Others Billie Holiday was born April 7th 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Although Holiday was born in Philadelphia, she spent a great amount of her childhood in Baltimore, Maryland. There she, her mother Sarah Julia Fagan, otherwise known as Sadie, and her father, Clarence Holiday, lived with hardships they've encountered. Some of the hardships they've encountered was the father's infrequent visits in her life, Sadie remarried a guy named Philip Gough and they all lived in a sturdy home with Billie for a few years, few years later their marriage ended. This placed Sadie and Billie in harsh living standards which lead to Sadie leaving Billie in care of other people. Background Information Billie Holiday became a Heroin addict in 1947, this lead to her arrest for the possession of narcotics. In addition to this, she spent 8-10 months serving her time in prison, this greatly impacted her career after she got out of prison to re-attempt performing at clubs that rejected her. What I see that is very important for deciphering struggles is that perserverance is what people lack in when it comes to hard times. In her effort in still becoming someone who made history she deserves to be a hero.
