A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball. Blocking occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a field goal attempt from an offensive player to prevent a score. The defender is not allowed to make contact with the offensive player's hand (unless the defender is also in contact with the ball) or a foul is called. Blocking Blocking A 5- second violation called against an offensive player with the ball when that player is guarded closely for five seconds or more, and does not pass, shoot, or dribble within that time. ... The count applies to a player who is only holding the ball. 5- second violation 5- sec violation A double dribble is called against an offensive player with the ball when that player is guarded closely for five seconds or more, and does not pass, shoot, or dribble within that time. ... Double Dribble Double Dribble Goal Tending Violations 3 Goaltending is the violation of interfering with the ball while it is on its way to the basket and it is in a downward flight, entirely above the rim and has the possibility of entering the basket, and not touching the rim. Backcourt Violation. Once the basketball crosses the center line and into the offensive zone, it's a violation for the offense to dribble or pass it into the backcourt. Backcourt Violation Backcourt Violation The team committing a defensive three-second violation is assessed a team technical foul. The offense receives one free throw and retains possession of the ball. So a 3-second violation is his or her body in the key (blue area) for more than three seconds. 3- second violation 3- second violation Purple Area 3 second violation Basketball Terms Basketball Terms Free Throw - Free throws are generally awarded after a foul on the shooter by the opposing team. Steal - a steal occurs when a defensive player legally causes a turnover by his positive, aggressive actions Rebound - a statistic awarded to a player who retrieves the ball after a missed field goal or free throw. Rebounds are also given to a player who tips in a missed shot on his team's offensive end. Jumpball - A jump ball is a method used to begin or resume play in basketball. It is similar to a face-off in ice hockey and field lacrosse and a ball-up in Australian rules football. Two opposing players attempt to gain control of the ball after an official tosses it into the air between them. It is the way you start a basketball game In basketball, a player may attempt to score a basket by leaping straight into the air, the elbow of the shooting hand cocked, ball in hand above the head, and lancing the ball in a high arc towards the basket for a jump shot. This is called a jumpshot. What is a jump shot? Jumpshot James Naismith was a Canadian-American physical educator, physician, Christian chaplain, sports coach and innovator. He invented the game of basketball at age 30 in 1891. He wrote the original basketball rule book and founded the University of Kansas basketball program. Who was James Naismith?
