She was born, says the Nurse in the play, on Lammas Eve, July 31, and was therefore a Leo. We don’t know Romeo’s age, but as we shall see, Romeo may be associated with a star that was considered at the time to be a “second Sun,” the fixed star Sirius, also known as the Prince. The metal associated with Leo, the Sun, and royalty is gold. At the end of the play, the fathers of the entombed Romeo and Juliet vow to build memorial statues of the symbolic metal, gold." Astrology "The heavens themselves, the planets, and this centre Observe degree priority and place Insisture course proportion season form Office and custom, in all line of order; And therefore is the glorious planet Sol In noble eminence enthron’d and spher’d Amidst the other, whose med’cinable eye Corrects the ill aspects of planets evil And posts like the commandment of a king, Sans check, to good and bad. But when the planets In evil mixture to disorder wander, What plagues and what portents, what mutiny, What raging of the sea, shaking of earth, Commotion in the winds, frights changes horrors, Divert and crack, rend and deracinate The unity and married calm of states Quite from their fixure. Oh, when degree is shak’d, Which is the ladder to all high designs, The enterprise is sick. How could communities, Degrees in schools and brotherhoods in cities, Peaceful commerce from dividable shores, The primogenitive and due of birth, Prerogative of age, crowns sceptres laurels, But by degree stand in authentic place? Take but degree away, untune that string, And hark, what discord follows." (Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida, I. iii. 75-137) There is very little evidence of the influence of astrology in Shakespeare's life, not enough to know the importance of it in his life. Although there is mention of inlfuence of stars on human destiny in some of his work, for example in King of Lear, and Anthony and Cleopatra. Also, people who are potrayed as foolish are also intended to be interested in astrology, so for example Malvolio from Twelfth Night. People in the Elizabethan times were also strong believers of the supernatural, which is tied in with astrology and superstitions, Shakespeare used ghosts in several plays inlcuding Hamlet adn Macbeth. http://www.elizabethan-era.org.uk/elizabethan-astrology.htm http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080711223209AAg8U3h Horoscopes are diagrams that represent the position of astrological aspects of the universe at a time of a certain event, like births. Horoscopes are organized by zodiac signs, they are divided into twelve different signs. http://www.wisheights.k12.wi.us/MS/Grade8/LangArts/Macbeth/ChainofBeingNotes.pdf What Was the Elizabethan View of the Universe? What Role Did Astrology Play in People’s Lives? Astrology Lina & Katie November 9th, 2011 Elizabethan's view of the universe in Shakespeare's time believed that the universe can be clearly ranked in order of superiority. This corresponded with their religion, beliefs, and political system, they had a limited understanding of the scientific world. They believed that all things could be divided or ranked according to celestial bodies. Astrology is the stufy of celestial bodies that are believed to have an influence on the natural course of human affaires and events. Astrology was enormously popular in the Elizabethan times and was extremely important to culture, most people would not make decisions unless they checked their horoscope casts to make sure that it was a proper time to do so. They would also use the study of astrology to decide when the best time was to do simple tasks, like taking a bath, having their hair cut, etc. Astrology is a number of beliefs that show that there is a relationship between the astronomical phenomena and events in the human world.
