Genius Hour Presentation
Transcript: Yes, there are problems, and I am humble enough to know that. First, the process would take a long time. Second, it requires the finesse of landing on a body that is moving really fast. But... you go with the best idea. And this is it. The Beginning What it would Look Like The Problems When I first started working on this project, the idea I had was to destroy the asteroid into tiny little pieces, and then gather the pieces up. However, this possibility was quickly deemed implausible to me when I considered a few facts. In the end, I decided that perhaps I would have to consider the possibility that perhaps the best solution is the one that is right in front of me the entire time. Perhaps the best solution is to send up a spacecraft and just have it mine the asteroid. With a drill. Or lasers. The Advantages Thanks for Watching! The Problems Reflection First, most asteroids long ago lost their magnetic fields, meaning that it would take a lot of work to be able to use magnets. Second, the cost of a magnet of this size would be enormous. Finally, I would be flirting with danger by sending an asteroid to a position near the Earth. Yeah... Kind of a Bad Idea The Problems The Middle Doing it this way might not result in the death of all humanity. That's a plus. Also, it doesn't require risky maneuvers that hopefully result in a slowed asteroid. What it could look like. The End (Except Not) In the middle of my project, my main focus was on the feasibility of using magnets to a) slow the asteroid and b) take the asteroid into a position in which it would be easier to mine. (Like the Earth's orbit.) Once again, I noticed a few problems. Genius Hour Presentation First, by creating space junk via the explosions of asteroids, I am creating a highly dangerous situation. Because those pieces would be moving so fast, it would be highly possible that any spacecraft would be ruined. Second, the possibility of picking up millions of tiny pieces is tedious at best. Finally, were I to explode an asteroid, it would not be possible to pick up all the pieces, resulting in lost materials. What it would hopefully look like Please set this Prezi back to the first view. During this project, I have learned that I often like to make things more complicated than the often need to be. I have also learned that while I will sometimes plan on having an orderly method, I do not always have one.
