Transcript: According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, the term"obesity" refers to a body weight that’s greater than what is considered healthy for a certain height. A child is considered obese if their BMI is at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same sex and age. Obesity is the result of “caloric imbalance”—too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed—and are affected by various genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors It is common enough to be considered an epidemic. As Stated on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Website Immediate Health Effects Presented by Orlee Bakhshizadeh Emotional/Mental Effects Teasing/Bullying As a result of childhood obesity, many children that have medical problems will have to miss class which means less money for the LAUSD schools when attendance is poor More likely to be obese as adults. More risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer, and osteoarthritis Increased risk for many types of cancer, including breast cancer, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, gall bladder, thyroid, ovary, cervix, and prostate. Related diabetes and heart disease is estimated to shorten children's lives by 20 to 40 years. Social Discrimination Prevalence of Childhood Obesity Food Being Served at LAUSD Schools Long-Term Health Effects Contributing Factors of Obesity Higher suicidal Thoughts According to the Centers for Disease Control, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 20% in 2008. In 2008, more than one third of children were overweight or obese. According to the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health, obesity rates among school-aged children increased from 20.2% in 1999 to 26.1% in 2008. More likely to have risk factors for high cholesterol or high bood pressure. In a population-based sample of 5 to 17-year-olds, 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Prediabetes Bone and joint problems Sleep Apnea and breathing problems Early Puberty Asthma Boxed drinks/juices contain a significant amount of calories and it is estimated that 20% of children who are currently obese are obese due to excessive caloric intake from beverages. http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/ha/reports/habriefs/2007/Obese_Cities/Obesity_2011Fs.pdf Spending more money/funding on programs to help children raise their self-esteem. Transcript: Roots of Obesity By: Christopher Ballantine, Oluwalgbon Oladitian, Jeffrey Mensah and Laila Kelly Introduction About Leptin plays a critical role in regulating the insulin-glucose axis, which regulates glucose and insulin responsiveness in the brain. Leptin resistance is the most prominent cause of obesity and other eating disorders such as diabetes. People struggling with obesity tend to have higher levels of leptin which can lead to rising leptin resistance, causing increased appetite and fewer calories burned. Leptin resistance occurs when leptin signaling issues arise in the brain and create a blockage of leptin transportation. Introduction Abstract The Science + We should care about obesity because we all either know someone who is obese, or live in neighborhoods that suffer from rising rates of obesity. Whether we are directly affected by it or not, obesity is an increasingly relevant problem that must be addressed. The first step to finding a solution to the crisis of obesity is educating the general public to make gain awareness about the epidemic. Causes may include inexpensive production for food, low metabolism, and an overabundance of leptin that plays a significant role in preventing obesity. Abstract Methodology Show & Tell we had to read the articles and annotate specific details in the articles that provided us with an understanding of the mechanics of leptin resistance and its relation to obese people. scientists at the National Institutes of Health conducted an experiment with mice to see the how the role of leptin would perform in the system of humans. numerous studies on the mice and concluded that the lack of functional leptin deficiency results in morbid obesity and type 2 diabetes. used to figure out how much of an influence leptin resistance has put on obese people who are not able to regulate their eating habits which causes them to become overweight. Methodology Atomic Ideas Results In Figure A, It displays a leptin sensitive individual where they prevent insulin biosynthesis and secretion from the pancreatic cells. In Figure B, it displays how the individual is shown as overweight because of the failure of the brain to signal the body to stop eating. Overall, the over consumption of foods with large amounts of sugars leads to a large number of triglycerides, which then secretes high levels of leptin.
