Transcript: Chosen Designer Ive endeavors to follow 10 rules created by his influential designer Dieter Rams referred to as "the ten commandments of good design" and he has shown his use of them through his work at Apple. Research influential designer Dieter Rams Dieter Rams was the designer who Ive was most influenced by. Rams created the ten commandments of good design in which can be see in both his and Ive's designs today. Rams focuses on the essentials saying "the less, the better." I have shown this in my designs as well as the ten commandments. Rapid Visualization I have come up with several possibilities for chair concepts and i have designed them using the ten rules and made further development towards them. Concepts Final Presentation Timeline Evaluation Jonathan Ive's designs have influenced the way I design my products. Through concepts it can be seen that I've designed my chairs using both the ten commandments and the style of which Ive uses in his products. Using simple colours and smooth textures to show absolute simplicity but also keep them open to further development. Ives work has influenced me to focus on the essentials and not the not needed things, taking into account that the less the better so my designs are more user friendly and easy to use. Birth of Modernism 1860 Today Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimises physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product. Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression. 1973 opening of the Sydney opera house designed by Jorn Utzon 7. a good design is thorough down to the last detail For my first concept I based the design on the latest iMac, one of Ive's latest designs using the same shapes and sizes to get a much more sleek and simple design. I designed my chair using the ten rules to ensure that meets all the criterias of good design. 2. a good design is aesthetic Concept 2 Concept 2 It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept. A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it. Isometric Dieter Rams 1932 - today Jonathan Ive 1880 It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory. 1900 Norman Foster 1935 - today Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 1886 - 1969 Dick Fizzell 1943-today Sir Jonathan Ive is the senior vice president of industrial design at Apple. born in london, UK. Ive has many of Apple's products including the iMac, iPhone, iPod and Macbook. concept 1 Front view lead Designer for concept 1 Le Crobusier 1887 - 1965 This chair was based on the design of one of Ive's earlier designs the iMac 2nd generation which featured a fully adjustable neck for the monitor and a mixture of some of my other ideas. Like the iMac 2 the neck of the chair is adjustable. I used the same colours as the iMac like the bright white to keep it basic but still look complex. For the materials i used a hard glossy plastic for the base, the seat and the back rest and I used gossy silver metal for the neck of the chair. 6. a good design is long-lasting The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful. It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years – even in today’s throwaway society. 3. a good design makes a product understandable Planometric Prospective on the size of the chair compared to a computer desk Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity. latest iMac one of Ive's most recent and recognizable designs 5. a good design is honest Types of design in the 20th century Orthographic 9. a good design makes a product useful Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the user. 1. a good design is innovative 1980 iChair Presentation 1920 Jorn Utzon 1918 - 2008 1960 2000 4. a good design is unobtrusive 1940 The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself. 1998 Ive's first project at apple 'the iMac' Jonathan Ive 1967-today 10. a good design is as little as possible Oscar Nimeyer
