Working At Capilano University

Transcript: Richter, Brent. Capilano University Campus. 2015. Capilano University, Vancouver. North Shore News. Web. 21 Mar. 2017. Info Name: Sandra Mcrae ( mother ) Job: General Manager at Capilano University Email: sandramcrae@capilanou.ca My Name: Holly Elliot My Day at Capilano University My mom is the general manager of the theater in Capilano University. There are many different types of shows that go on in this theater but mainly shows that have something to do with music. It is a fairly small venue but it is very cute What I could use in the future that I learnt : - communicating with many different people and ages - how to properly sort money Bibliography Working At Capilano University I really liked printing a bunch of papers for my mother. It made me feel very professional. I got to hold her keys and scan her ID to access the printer. This is a picture of the desk that i worked on with my mom. You can see that we grabbed some tea from the Tim Hortons that was in the school cafeteria. One of the main things that I helped with was counting money for the concession. I really enjoy working with numbers so I liked this part. This is a photo of what Capilano University looks like. It is surrounded by nature and has a very good atmosphere. I did a lot of filing for my mom. I helped her organize a lot of files and sort out a bunch of events. Here, is a photo of the filing cabinet that was in my mom's office. Two things I liked about today: - getting to know all of my mother's co-workers - Working with money I did not dislike anything that I did at my mom's work

Transcript: Shawna M. Carroll, PhD Review Think-Pair-Share 1. Your understanding 2. Example in ECCE Discourse Discourse “the way things are named, spoken up, and written that comes to be experienced as objective and true” (Pacini-Ketchabaw et al., 2015, p. 145) Understanding dominant discourses is understanding power What does the society or culture view as 'normal'? EX: The "school-ready child" Power Hierarchies Power Hierarchies Different subject positions are 'ranked' according to dominant discourses Dominant discourses create understandings of what is desirable EX: Idea that it's better for children to learn from "native speakers" (Butler et al., 2019) Systemic Oppression Systemic Oppression The system that allows one group to enforce prejudice & discrimination in society Not individual, it is based on institutional power and control These systems are often invisible to the dominant group or taken-for-granted EX: reproduction of sexism through play-based learning (Prioletta, 2023) This Week's Reading RepaIring the "Cartesian split" Jigsaw a. What is the main message of your section? b. How can you apply the message in ECCE? Kulago, H. A., Wapeemukwa, W., Guernsey, P. J., & Black, M. (2021). Land, water, mathematics, and relationships: What does creating decolonizing and Indigenous curricula ask of us? Educational Studies, 57(3), 345-363. mind body spirit Matt Matthew Black Western schooling is based on memorization Critical math challenges the current power structure We must examine our own past schooling to find how our knowledge has been influenced by colonization Science and math knowledge are used as excuses for further colonization math is NOT purely objective "How can land and relationships serve as mathematical pedagogy?" (p. 348). Not for the same goal, but from a different way of knowing/thinking community and cultural knowledge is key EX: Small Number stories Paul Paul Guernsey Place-based education ignores settler complicity and responsibility It can mirror "discovery" / colonial narratives of mastering the land Instead of focusing on the settler-made problem (dams), focus on the land and what it can teach us (rivers) Relational education understands the power of place and its histories learning about a place VS learning with a place EX: local river learning by watching the animals and plants Wayne Wayne Wapeemukwa Looking at how philosophy is connected to colonialism and colonial ideologies Creating assessments that ask students to critically situate themselves How we tell histories is important resistance and survivance VS erasure and victimization EX: family trees and implications to land and Indigenous erasure Exit Ticket Choose 1 to answer: a. Today’s reading talked about the dominant discourse in education that understands things through dualisms. How is this main idea connected to our reading last week on modernist ideas of the child? b. Please connect the ideas of decolonizing curriculum in this week's reading to at least one of the terms learned last week within ECCE.
