My Job Description
The job I have chosen is a Surgeon. A Surgeon is a person who can diagnose and help treat diseases through operations. Surgeons can treat physical injuries such as broken bones and also diseases such as cancer, organ infections, tumors and more. I chose this job because i want to be able to help people and treat illnesses that medicine cant help. Surgeons can save lives and that's what I want to do. There are a few different types of Surgical specialties and the specialty that I would like to work in is Cardiothoracic surgery. This form of surgery specializes on working with organs in the chest such as the heart, lungs, esophagus and more.
Wages and Earnings
A cardiothoracic surgeon can make anywhere from $147K-$582 a year. But the average annual salary for a cardiothoracic surgeon in Canada is $250K. A general surgeon, which specializes in the digestive system or gastrointestinal surgery makes on average $196K a year.
Working Conditions
Surgeons work in well lit rooms , they can see all that they are doing, because in this line of work one mistake could cost someones life. Surgery can sometimes take a very long time (on average from 3-6 hours or more if the procedure is harder or more complex). Due to the long procedures, surgeons are required to stand for long periods of time at a time with no breaks. Surgeons averagley work 50-60 hours a week or more, and that isnt including the on-call time. When a person is on-call that means that they can be home but if they are needed at anytime and get called into their work the have to go.
Surgeons do have room for advancement in the hospital. Surgeons have to complete their residency before becoming licensed so they will advanced from resident to licensed surgeon, and one might eventually go to the head surgeon in a hospital. Some surgeons decide to grow their career and start their own practice or join a group practice. Doing a private practice means that you wouldnt be working at a hospital you would be working by yourself or in the group, doing medical research trying to figure solutions for rare diseases.
Education and Additional Training Needed
All surgeons are required to have the most intensive preparation of all medical specialties. For any surgeon to be allowed to operate on people they need at least, four years of university, for years of medical school which would lead to a doctor of medicine (M.D.) degree, and three to eight years of residency at a hospital. For cardiothoracic surgeons along with the four years of university and medicine school, the need a 5 year general surgeon residency and on top of that a 2-3 year specialized cardiothoracic courses. Three universities that can offer programs for this job are Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University.
My Job
Job Satisfaction
I do believe that I will be happy/ satisfied with this job. I think this because I really want to help people and that's what surgeons do, they can help people with cancer and infections and help make peoples lives better and I really think its amazing.
