UNDER the water... and OVER the water Why is this important? 90% of all international trade travels by sea 70% of the earth's surface is water In other words, what happens on the water MATTERS It matters to keeping the peace It matters to our economy and American jobs It matters to national defense. We are a nation bounded by oceans, after all. And that's what the Navy is for For all of these reasons, we need to protect ourselves ON, UNDER and OVER the water... 80% of the world's population lives near the ocean... and this percentage will grow in the future So... what is the Navy and what is it for?
