About the Artist
Taylor Swift is a pop-country singer/songwriter born on December 13, 1989 (age 23), in Pennsylvania, USA. She moved to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of fourteen to pursue a career , and continued to be the youngest artist ever signed by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. Swift is known for writing poetically lyrical songs about her experiences as a teenager and young adult, and has released four top-selling albums. She has also won seven Grammy Awards.
The Song
Theme and Tone
The song Red has many different variations of tone and feeling throughout it. These emotions are symbolized in the chorus through the use of different colours, and through the rest of the song with vivid mental images, that can be related back to real life experiences.
Similes
The main poetic device used in this song is the simile. They emphasize the confusing and frustrating feelings that Taylor experienced while being in love. Her similes paint vivid mental images and add to the overall intrigue of the song.
Lyrics and Poetic Devices
Loving him
is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end
street
Faster than the

wind
,
passionate as

sin

ending so

suddenly
Loving him
is like trying to change your mind once you're alredy flying through the free
fall
Like the colors in autumn, so bright just before they lose it
all

[Chorus:]
Losing him was blue like I'd never
known
Missing him was dark grey all
alone
Forgetting
him was like trying to know somebody you never
met

[imperfect rhyme]
But
loving him
was
red
[imperfect rhyme]
Loving him

was
red
[perfect rhyme]

[Verse 2:]
Touching him was like realizing all you ever wanted was right there in front of you
Memorizing him was as easy as knowing all the words to your old favorite
song
Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realizing there's no right answer
Regretting him was like wishing you never found out that love could be that
strong

[Chorus:]
Losing him was blue like I'd never known
Missing him was dark grey all alone
Forgetting
him was like trying to know somebody you never
met
[imperfect rhyme]
But
loving him
was
red
[imperfect rhyme]
Oh,
red
[perfect rhyme]
Burning red
[perfect rhyme]

[Bridge:]
Remembering him comes in flashbacks and
echoes
Tell myself it's time now,
gotta let

go
But moving on from him is
impossible
When I still see it all in my
head [perfect rhyme]
Burning red
[perfect rhyme]
Loving him

was

red
[perfect rhyme]

[Chorus:]
Oh, losing him was blue like I'd never known
Missing him was dark grey all along
Forgetting
him was like trying to know somebody you never
met

[imperfect rhyme]
'
Cause
loving him
was
red

[imperfect rhyme]
Yeah, yeah, red
[perfect rhyme]
We're
burning

red
[perfect rhyme]

[Post-Chorus:]
And that's why he's spinnin' 'round in my

head
Comes back to me,
burning

red
Yeah, yeah

His love was like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street

Rhyme
Metaphors
Taylor used colours to capture the essence of the emotions she was feeling as she fell in and out of love, in the form of metaphors.
By Taylor Swift
Red
The whole song has a kind of reflective sadness about it, as she is looking back and remembering that the love she had didn't work out, no matter how hard she tried to make it last. As Taylor gets to the chorus, she remembers that despite the struggle, the love they shared was exciting, beautiful, and passionate, and she'd do anything to have that back. The whole theme of the song is about the thrill of finding new love and the heartache from losing it.

"Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street"
Red in this song represents the passion. Blue is the sadness she feels when she knows she can't be with him.
Dark Grey is the feeling of emptiness she experiences when he's gone.
The title itself, Red, is a metaphor that not only consumes the song, but underscores the theme of the whole album. No matter the consequences of her relationship, or what she does to try and stop it, the "burning red" passion and desire always wins the battle inside her heart.
The rhyme flows through the song, like the journey her love was on.
The rhymes in this song give off a playful energy that represents Taylor's youth. The fact that she used a mixture of perfect and imperfect rhymes represents how back-and forth love can be. It also prevents the song from becoming too Dr. Suess-like and silly.
