Animal Hair vs Human Hair
Transcript of Animal Hair vs Human Hair
Human Hair The Basics Both human and animal hair, or fur, are composed of the 3 basic elements of hair: Medulla, Cortex, and Cuticle. Length Differences Animal hair is synchronized and tends to stop growing at a certain length. It will sometimes fall out and be replaced by another hair Cuticle Scaling Relative Size Even though all hair contains the same basic elements, the size of each varies Pigmentation Human hair tends to be a consistent color from root to tip, whereas animal hair can do something know as DNA With today's DNA testing, scientists can identify DNA from a human or an animal. If is is from an animal, they can determine the species as well. If the scientists have other DNA samples, they can compare the samples to determine if the two DNA samples match. However, they need the root of the hair sample to test for DNA Both also are made of a protein called Keratin, and a pigment, Melanin Human hair does not stop growing. It will keep growing until the person decides to cut it Flattened Coronal Spinous Type usually found in humans Small, flat scales that lay close to one another Found on cats, seals, and minks, but never on humans Triangular in shape, and tend to lift away at the tips Shaped like a crown and are arranged in stacks along the cuticle Found on bats and rodents, but is rare in humans The medulla in an animal's hair must be larger than a human's to protect the animal from heat, cold, and rain Human medullary idex< 1/3 width of hair Melanin controls pigmentation in all hair Banding Drastic color variations throughout the hair The root of an animal's hair is also somewhat larger than a human's to help insulate the animal from the weather Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine consider this such an extreme difference, they don't think human hair and animal hair should be grouped together Animals also have an undercoat which helps keep them insulated in the winter and summer. It is a fine and short layer of fur underneath the coarser fur at the top The End Works Cited Miley, Michelle. "Animal Hair vs Human Hair." eHow. Demand Media Inc..
