Species: leo The lion has many common ancestors such as the jaguar, tiger, and leopard which are all part of the cat family. But the animal that shares the most genetic information with the lion is the tiger. The lion diverged from the tiger about 4 million years ago. Both the lion and the tiger have many characteristics that make them unique and help them survive and thrive. Some characteristics of the lion and the tiger are different and some are the same. Environment and Adaptations of Lions Lions live in grassy plains or dry forests. Most modern day lions live in sub-Saharan Africa. Some of the adaptations that allow lions to survive and thrive are their excellent camouflage that allows them to avoid other animals, fur that keeps them warm, squinted eyes that help them look around on sunny days, their keen sense of hearing that helps search for prey, and sharp teeth and claws.
