A few items to highlight from your First Grade Parent Packet...
Dojo Details
Track student behavior and learning skills throughout the day.
Send parents a “behavior and skills report” every Friday by email.
Better understanding of the progress of your child as a student on a week to week basis.

Ensure completion of homework pages - 2-3 times a week. No homework on weekends!
1. You will need to READ directions to your child.
2. If your child CANNOT figure out what to do within 5 minutes working alone, make note of it at the top and send it back to school
unfinished
. This is a quick assessment of which students are not grasping certain concepts.
Review "Scoring Guides" with your child; encourage personal writing; review Grammar tests/quizzes
Guided Reading
Assessed and assigned a guided reading level based on word-knowledge, comprehension, and fluency.
I work closely with each student (in small groups) to help them become better readers by introducing them to increasingly challenging books/strategies while meeting the varying instructional needs of each child in the room through guided reading.
Daily 5
Structured program that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.
5 components:
Read-To-Self
Work-On-Writing
Listen-To-Reading
Read-To-Someone
Word Work
While students are working on the Daily 5, I will be meeting with Guided Reading Groups. (Next Slide)
Books
Come home EVERYNIGHT (even weekends)
Read the book EVERYNIGHT (re-read)
Send back to school EVERYDAY
NO POUCH = NO BOOK
LOST BOOK = $ FEE
Make a Routine

MATH IS NOT MEMORIZING...TELLING
WHY
AND
HOW
IS MATH!
- If you don't solve it that is okay!
- DON'T SWEAT OVER THE TOPICS...DON'T FREAK OUT IF YOU MISS SOMETHING
-The topic is just an excuse. You want to give students a
'mathematical experience'
- Give them an opportunity to communicate their thoughts (words, pics, etc.) "How did I arrive at this answer?"
- Why do we do this in the first place?
"Math is an excellent vehicle and platform for the development and improvement of a persons intellectual competence"
Technology: Computer Coding
I will make time in our classroom to introduce and teach the basic computer coding 'format' which is essentially the process of breaking down problems and teaching a student (and the computer!) how to use critical thinking:
A CRUCIAL 21st Century Skill
FACT: 1 million of the best jobs may go unfilled because 1 in 10 schools teach CODE.

Buzz Words = Sight Words

Make up 80% of all print
Cannot be decoded - Must know by "sight"
Imperative to master to further student reading
More information and student levels will be available in coming weeks!
Math Maniac Facts
Knowing math facts automatically frees up the brain to focus on more complex areas of math.
We'll start in the fall!
Similar to the sight Word A.K.A. "Buzz Word" program
More information and student levels will be available in coming weeks!
