Limiting factor What is a limiting factor? Some plants exsist in environments with very low light intensity.
Examples:

Defined, for a metabolic process, as that factor present at the lowest or least favorable value. Lights role in photosynthesis As photons hit the leaf, water is split by photolysis and H+ ions , oxygen and electrons. H+ ions are used in chemiosis to produce ATP and to produce reduced NADP.
Photophosphorylation: light causes electrons to become excited, which are then captured by electron acceptors, pass along electron carriers and enrgy is released. The energy is used to create a gradient by chemiosmosis. A force produced joins ADP and Pi making ATP.

Light also causes stomata to open specifically by cyclic photophorylation.


How does light limit photosynthesis? A low light intensity means limits the number of photons that hit chlorophyll molecules thus limiting the number of ewlectrons that become excited and the amount of ATP and NADPH.
Less photons will also result in less splitting of water by photoylsis and therefore there will be less H+ ions to be used in chemiosmosis in the process of photophosphorylation.
Less non-cyclic photophosphorylation will also slow down gaseous exchange and therefore the rate of photosynthesis. The relationship between light intensity and rate of photosynthesis The rate of photosynthesis is directly proportional to light intensity.
