Transcript of Civil War

CiVil War Comparson North South Population was up to 31 million people Population was 12 Million
with 1/3 of them being
slaves They grew cotton gin and
became one of the richest
parts of the world.
They had a farming based economy They were a cheaper part of
America and earned money by
manufacturing.They had large
companies and were not good for
farming There were four different guys that
ran for office but Lincoln sailed to
a strange victory Constitution Written in 1787 Slavery was Constitutional North and South had different opinions and arguments led to the war Presidental Election of 1860 Divided between 4 men Lincoln won with only 40% of Votes South was scared that slavery
was going to be taken away This showed how divided the
nation was Fort Sumter 1861 A federal fort in Charleston Harbor People were angered by Lincoln saying the Secession was wrong South Carolina opened fired
over the issue The issues were decided

-In north all were free
-If free they were still discriminated and segregated Missouri Compromise
-Agreed to a compromise
instead of breaking up the
-Compromise addmitted Missouri to the union as a slave state and Maine as a free state Bull Run 1861 Also known as the Great Awakening Its the name of a creek It was the first battle of the Civil War It made Lincoln relize ending the rebellion wouldn't be easy Lincolns Assassination 1865 A group of unhappy people
planned to kidnapp Lincoln Their plans failed so they planned to
kill Lincoln along with other government
related people to strenghthen the Southern
Booth shot Lincoln in the back
of the head and jumped onto the
stage flashing his knife. He then
escaped out the back door. Lots of the people got caught and
punished some even being hanged. Compromise of 1877 Democrats agreed to accept
the Republican presidental
electors The Republicans agreed to:
-Withdraw federal soilders from their
remaining postitions in the south
- Entact federal legislation that would
spur industrialzation in the south
- Appoint Democrats to patronge postitions
in the south
- Appoint a Democrat to the president's
cabinet Missouri Compromise 1820 Agreed to a compromise instead
of breaking up the Union The further introduction
of slaves into Missouri was
not allowed All children of slave parents born
after admission were to be free at the
age of 25 Emancipation Proclamation 1863 Its purpose was to free slaves
and weaken the southern economy The acual effects were that
thousands of slaves were still
on the borders Bleeding Kansas
-Slavery was argued about
fighting got brutal and bloody
-This was because there were 2 different sides Manifest Destiny/ Trail of Tears/ Mexican War
-Expansion of slavery and U.S. territory Federalism
-The U.S during the civil war Civil War 1860 Lincoln and the War
620,000 died in the war The war lasted throughout his
entire presidenty He viewed the confederates
as rebels Emancipation Proclamation It was signed in 1863 Its purpose ws to free slaves and
weaken the southern economy The effects were that thousands
of slaves were still on the borders South Carolina
Succession 1860 The first state to sucede 6 states suceded because they were scared of their slavery being taken away Lincoln said that he was going to not allow it in the west, but not mess with it in the south The secession was peaceful Draft Riots 1863 The worst, bloodiest, and most destructive riot of all The largest reason for this was because in New York City which had before too many soilders in the Union now had too little In result mobs set African American churches and orphanages on fire, attacked offices, and either

Plantation- new settlement
Union- a uniting of two or more things
Federalism- a system of government where the power is shared between state governments
Confederacy- a group of people who have united for unlawful practices
Civil War Amendments- This includes the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments
Secession- A withdraw from the Union
Abraham Lincoln- He was the 16th president until his assassination in 1865 he also led the country through the Civil War and ended slavery
John Wilkes Booth- He was an actor who assassinated president Lincoln
Jefferson Davis- An American military officer that led the Confederacy
Free-Soil Party- A 3erd Political Party whose purpose was preventing the expansion of slavery into the west
Segregation- The seperation of different types of people
Fredrick Douglass- A former slave who escaped and put in strong contributions to the abolitionist movement
Sectionalism- the loyalty to your own section of land or region
Ulysses S. Grant- Military commander under his order the Union Army defeated the Confederate military and ended the Confederate states of America
Black Codes- laws passed in the U.S. to limit the civil rights and liberties of blacks
Industrial Revolution- Where major changes were made to aguiculture, manufacturing, and mining
Fugitive Slave Law- A law passed by congress provided the seizure and return of run away slaves
Share Cropping- A system where a landowner allows a tenant to use the land in return for a share of the crop produced on the land
Gettysburg Address- A famous speech givin by Lincoln that talked about equality to all the U.S. citizens
Dred Scott Decision- A decision by the supreme court that said the people from the African desendant and imported to the U.S. as slaves, or their desendants, couldnt be protected by the Constitution or be an American citizen

Reconstruction 1865-1877 Short Term It was the rebuilding of the South Northern Military controled the South Protection of African Americans Black Codes 1- It limited free men and their rights
2-They forces former slaves to work on the plantations
3- Former slaves were at the bottom of the social class Amendments
13- Banned slavery (made it legal)
14-Allowed former slaves to become citizens
15- Protected former slaves voting rights Loooonnnggg Term Share Cropping
-former slaves rented land from owners to have equipment and seeds provided
=Former slaves often fell into huge debts and were forced to work for other owners Jim Crow Laws
-He legalized segregation between whites and blacks
-Laws were only passed after the compromise of 1877
