A single wheel or a pair of wheels was used to translate the motion of the mouse into cursor movement on the screen. Engelbart was the inventor on the basic patent for what was then called the "X-Y Position Indicator for a Display System." The patent was filed in 1967 and issued in 1970.
SRI licensed the computer mouse technology to Apple, Xerox, and other companies. The mouse became commercially viable in 1984, three years before the patent's expiration.

-ball mouse replaced external wheels with a single ball
-that could rotate in any direction.
- came as part of the hardware package of Xerox Alto computer.
-Perpendicular chopper wheels housed inside the mouse's body chopped beams of light on the way to light sensors
-thus detecting in their turn the motion of the ball. This variant of the mouse
- resembled an inverted trackball
- became the main form used with personal computers throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

- Earliest optical mice detected movement on pre-printed mouse pad surfaces

-while still being large enough to easily remove
