Social Influence - Conformity AS Psychology Lesson Objective To analyse and understand research into why people conform In 1935, a psychologist named



conduced an experiment to show that in an ambiguous situation, participants looked to others in the group for guidance. Participants gave their estimations. There was a vast range in the estimations as everyone gave different measurements. Experiment conclusion: People are more likely to conform in an AMBIGUOUS situation to a group norm. Asch (1951) wanted to to take Which of the 3 lines matches the 1st? How can we apply the 3 situational effects to this experiment? This was done using an optical illusion test involving a bright light in a dark room. Participants were asked to judge how far the light moved.. Participants were then arranged into groups with 3 others and asked to read allowed their estimations. A group norm occurred The experiment then was altered: participants were asked to give their estimates in a group situation first, THEN asked individually... What do you think happened? Is this an example of NORMATIVE or INFORMATIONAL social influence? In addition to this, the group norm was still used when participants were asked to use their individual judgements. experiment one step further.. He wanted to see if people would conform to normative social influence when the answer to a question was stupidly obvious! What do you think?
