Celebrating
20 Years of Inspired Teaching

1995:
Inspired Teaching
is founded!
Fall 1995:
Inspired Teaching's first board meeting is held around Aleta's kitchen table in Washington, DC.
1996
Spring 1996:
Inspired Teaching is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
Summer 1996:
The Washington Post
writes a feature article about Inspired Teaching and our innovative model.
Summer 1996: at the first Inspired Teaching Institute,

12 DCPS teachers experience professional development carefully designed to be intellectually, emotionally,
and
physically engaging, leveraging all the different ways we learn.
"The image of the conventional teacher, chalk in hand, lecturing from in front of students sitting at their desks? There's growing evidence to suggest that won't survive much into the next century, as educators . . . are attempting to fix what's broken in American education. Not by debating the length of the school year or the merits of a voucher system. . . . But by rethinking how children learn best and trying to reshape the classroom to reflect that."
Full Washington Post article available at http://tinyurl.com/revolution96.

1997

.
Summer 2001:
Summer 2001:
Inspired Teaching introduces our "5 Step Process" at the Inspired Teaching Institute. These principles lead teachers through a rigorous examination of their personal learning styles and beliefs about children while helping teachers build student-centered instructional strategies.

Building on our proven expertise in teacher training, Inspired Teaching contributes to the national conversation about what great teaching and learning and meaningful assessment should look like.

"Teachers who have undergone training by Inspired Teaching say it is unlike other professional development, which, they said, is often unconnected to the realities they face in the classroom. Instead, teachers said [Inspired Teaching's] often-intensive training teaches them ways to address learning, discipline, and other facets of the teaching experience within the constraints they face every day."
Fall 2005:
To increase impact system-wide, Inspired Teaching begins an intentional programmatic shift from courses and mentoring to investing in whole school partnerships.
2007: After more than 10 years of demonstrated impact, Inspired Teaching's individual supporters grows from two to more than 200.
From 1995-2007, the number of Inspired Teaching corporate and foundation supporters and in-kind donors grows to nearly 50.
August 2008: Inspired Teaching holds another alumni conference for teachers to reconnect, network, and learn new strategies to continue transforming the school experience for students.
After leading numerous successful whole school partnerships, Inspired Teaching develops a new theory of change to transform the school experience for even more teachers and students:
